Judge to Appear in Season Four of Atlantis

Not only is Amanda Tapping moving into the main cast of Stargate Atlantis for Season Four, but SG-1 actor Christopher Judge is scheduled to make an appearance in an episode in the first half of the new season, according to Joseph Mallozzi in a recent Chicago Tribune interview.

Mallozzi also addresses the possibilities of the remaining SG-1 main cast members’ appearances in Season Four:

There were no plans at present, he said, to have Ben Browder (who plays “SG-1’s” Cameron Mitchell), Claudia Black (“SG-1’s” Vala Mal Doran) or Michael Shanks (“SG-1’s” Daniel Jackson) guest on “Atlantis,” but Mallozzi didn’t rule it out.

“They’re going to be in the two [‘Stargate SG-1′ DVD] movies” that are being filmed this spring, Mallozzi said. As far as bringing them back to “Atlantis,” “it’s a matter of coming up with a believable story and the actors’ availability and everything else. At this point it makes more sense for Teal’c or for Daniel Jackson to come to ‘Atlantis’ than for [Cameron] Mitchell.”

He added that Christopher Judge, who plays Teal’c on “SG-1,” will guest on one early fourth season episode of “Atlantis.”

The article also addresses the premise behind the new season’s storyline:

Mallozzi said that Season 4 of “Atlantis” would also feature the arrival of a new alien race, one that will be an “unpredictable wild card.”

“Looking over the 10 stories we’ve been thinking about” for the first half of Season 4 of “Atlantis,” Mallozzi said, “the easiest way to put it is that a lot of [stuff] is going to go down. Some fans will not like it, some fans will love it. We’re going to get movement on characters, and we’ll have some fairly character-centric stories. We’re going to develop an aspect of the Wraith, and we’re going to have this new wild-card race,” he said.

Atlantis Season Four to Have a Fall Premiere

A recent article published by SCI FI WIRE has announced that Season Four of Stargate Atlantis will have a fall premiere instead of the usual summer premiere that the show has had for the last three seasons.

Also included in the annoucement was the welcoming of Amanda Tapping and Jewel Staite to Atlantis. Tapping will be reprising her role from Stargate SG-1 as Lt. Col. Samantha Carter in 14 episodes of the 20-episode season. Staite will return as Dr. Keller (introduced in Season Three’s finale, “First Strike”) for eight episodes.

Filming of the fourth season will begin next month. SciFi describes the new season: “The new season will introduce a powerful new race, new cast members and mark the loss of beloved friends.”

SGA S4 Spoilers: Mallozzi Reveals Episode Titles

First half of Season Four well under way

Joseph Mallozzi, Stargate Atlantis‘s new co-showrunner, has revealed the titles of some of the first episodes to the show’s fourth season. Although very few spoilers are given for to their plots, the titles of the episodes give tantalizing clues as to what is in store for the Atlantis Expedition.

On the Stargate front, I’m almost finished my rewrite of Reunion and am, admittedly, a little worried. While the script offers plenty of action, it is primarily a character-driven story. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of notes we receive from the network. The other scripts are coming along nicely. Martin [Gero] kicks off season 4 with Adrift, continuing the events of the visually stunning season-ender First Strike. Carl’s [Binder] Lifeline, the big op eppy, is next. Reunion will follow third and then – well, we’re still working that out. On the production schedule, Rob [Cooper] is first up with Doppelganger, a.k.a. N.O.A.S., assuming both writing and directing duties on this one. Alan’s [McCullough] The Seer script is being revised as we speak. And sometime soon, Monday I hear, Paul [Mullie] will have Travelers ready, a gift for all those of the Shep-whumping persuasion.

Mallozzi has stated in earlier posts that there will be an episode dedicated to each of the main characters in the first ten episodes of the season. No doubt, there will be a lot of bases to cover, as the show introduces and develops the story arcs for SG-1’s Lt. Col. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping), the new medical doctor Dr. Keller (Jewel Staite, introduced in “First Strike”), and the new 304 commander, Col. Abe Ellis (Michael Beach, introduced in “First Strike”), as well as covering the returning Lt. Col. John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett), Teyla Emmagan (Rachel Luttrell), and Ronon Dex (Jason Momoa). Noticeably absent from full-time appearances will be Dr. Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson), who has been reduced to recurring in the new season, and Dr. Carson Beckett (Paul McGillion), who will killed in Season Three’s “Sunday”.

Tapping Speaks About Joining Atlantis Cast

Tapping’s Carter will be in 14 episodes in Season Four

Amanda Tapping has posted on her official website about her move to Stargate Atlantis for the show’s fourth season. She also talked about her work schedule and the SG-1 movies:

I am also joining the cast of Atlantis next year for 14 episodes!! I am delighted. I have been quoted as saying that “I am contractually obligated to the franchise for another year.” This sounds incredibly cold. It’s strange sometimes to see your words in print. I want to be on the record as saying that I am very excited about the move to Atlantis. I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for the character of Carter and for me personally. I am also aware that some people are not thrilled with the idea. I can only say that I think it will be a nice fit. I know Atlantis is not my show and I intend to tread lightly on their boards. I have a huge amount of respect for the cast and crew and hope that I will add to the show and not take away from anyone. I have talked at great length with Joe and Paul. When they first pitched the idea to me, I was a little nervous. After talking to them I am convinced that this is a good move. They are very excited about show running Atlantis and I am sure their enthusiasm will be felt on screen. I will also be in the two SG-1 TV movies which are shooting in April and June. I am looking at a very busy and fulfilling year. Surprisingly, I will have a bit more time off this year to spend with my family as I am only scheduled for four days per episode on Atlantis. This is perfect for me. Olivia is an absolute wonder and Alan and I are enjoying this time immensely.

SGA: Carson Beckett's story

Please be advised, there are spoilers for the second half of Atlantis Season 3.

A short history of “Saving Carson Beckett”…

The first hints of Carson Beckett’s fate came in August 2006, when both Torri Higginson and David Hewlett warned of shocking developments to come in the latter half of Season 3 that would “set the internet on fire.” [Note: they were not referencing Weir’s change in status; they did not yet know about it.]

Next came rumors that an extra who had been on set during the filming of “Sunday” had seen the filming of a funeral scene in which a coffin was draped with a Scottish flag.

Then in October, Jewel Staite announced at a convention in the UK that she was considering a recurring role as a doctor on Stargate Atlantis. She let slip to a table of fans that Paul McGillion would no longer be on the show, but this was not said in public. Jewel quickly backed away from her statements, declining to provide any information about her role. But, a casting director at the New Jersey Stargate convention that same month told fans Jewel was contracted for 12 episodes, nearly as many as Paul had been appearing in even as a regular.

To this point, it’s fair to say many fans did not believe that the rumors and various bits of news added up to Carson Beckett being written out of the show. The campaign to save him had started in September, with many expressions of support but also a fair number accusations of overreaction by fans.

Then on the weekend of 17-18 November, at a con in the UK, producer N. John Smith explained that Carson Beckett would “disappear” by the end of Season 3. He softened the news with the much-used cliché that “no one ever dies sci fi,” but fans were still shocked to hear it. It later became clear that Smith was not supposed to have given this news publicly.

The campaign certainly gained momentum with this news, but Smith’s reported use of the term “disappeared” leant enough doubt for some fans to declare Carson’s absence must be temporary and that surely he’d be back.

Once the news was public, Jewel Staite admitted it was true Paul was leaving, but claimed her new character, a prodigy doctor, would not be “replacing” Carson in the sense she would be playing a different character of a different gender. As much as no one blamed Jewel for taking a job, fans were led to question the swap and whether some assumptions about “desired demographics” played a role.

Final confirmation that Carson Beckett was to die and that Paul McGillion was being dismissed from the cast came on the weekend of 13-14 January 2007, when someone at MGM put unedited, raw video interviews of crew and cast members of Stargate on their web site. In David Hewlett’s interview, which was not supposed to be released until Season 3 had aired in the US, he talked about the loss of Paul from the set and of Carson from the show, and how it would happen in the episode “Sunday,” just as the campaign had said all along.

The next day, on 15 January, “Sunday” aired in Canada. Finally, it was shown that Carson died irrevocably, his body sent home to Earth for burial. Fans should not be comforted by his spirit “appearing” to Rodney in the final scene. Taken all together, it is unavoidably true that Carson and Paul are gone from Stargate Atlantis. In fact, in true Stargate tradition, Carson was not even mentioned in the next episode of Season 3, “Submersion.” As usual, he was killed off and forgotten as if his loss meant nothing to those remaining.

We don’t know why this decision was made. Carson was a very popular character, the “Heart of Atlantis,” and by all accounts, Paul McGillion was absolutely loved by the cast and crew. Paul has also made it clear it was not his decision to leave and that he would love to “play the good doctor” again.

Those of us who started fighting this decision in September are fighting even harder now, both because we love Carson and because, based on what we know, Paul McGillion did not deserve to be “fired.”

If you’re a fan of Carson, we invite you to join us in fighting to return him to his place on the show. Please visit us: SaveCarsonBeckett.com to read the details behind each discussion point above, sign our guestbook, write a letter to TPTB for us to send for you… in other words, join our fight!

Staite Talks About New Atlantis Role

Stargate Project Interviews Jewel Staite

Fans of Stargate Atlantis will be meeting a new character played by Firefly actress, Jewel Staite. Staite isn’t new to the Stargate universe, having played a young Wraith in Season Two’s “Instinct”.

Staite returns to Stargate Atlantis as a human medical doctor, Dr. Keller. According to a blog entry made by Staite, Dr. Keller will be a young genius in the medical field. She’s been asked to appear in possibly up to 12 episodes in Season Four.

The interview at Stargate Project covers several of Staite’s other projects, but there were two questions concerning Stargate Atlantis which might be of interest to fans (beware of slight spoilers ahead):

SGPnet: Are there any news on the character of Dr. Keller you will be playing next year in “Stargate – Atlantis”? Do you already know, if we see her in season four for the first time, or if she will be introduced already at the end of season three? And are you happy to get back to the show, to the catering and the breakfast sandwiches, which you said, you liked the best?

JS: Yes, she will be introduced at the end of season three. I can’t say a whole lot about her, because truthfully, I still don’t know a whole lot! I’ve only done one episode! I do know I’ll be on for a few episodes, but we still don’t know how many, and I can’t tell you any secrets unfortunately! I will say that the cast is great and a lot of fun, and the whole vibe on the set is very relaxed and easy-going. And there’s nothing wrong with a big greasy breakfast sandwich to start the day!

SGPnet: This time you will be playing a human woman without a mask, but you first appeared on the show as a Wraith-girl named Elia in the episode “Instinct” of season two, wearing heavy prosthetics and contact lenses. Through the experiences you made on this episode, would you still be up to play another alien or would you choose your role more carefully next time?

JS: Hmmm. Well, I definitely need a break from the prosthetics for a while, I will say that. That was TOUGH. I’ve never been so distracted from my performance before; it was a real challenge to concentrate on the scene when I was so uncomfortable under all of that stuff. I have such respect for actors wearing prosthetics now. It’s a true art to do it and still be a nice person to work with!

Higginson: SG-1 Will Feed Atlantis

Torri Higginson (Dr. Elizabeth Weir) talked with SCI FI Wire about the upcoming fourth season of Stargate Atlantis and how the show will benefit with the appearances of Amanda Tapping (Lt. Col. Samantha Carter) after SG-1’s cancellation. Higginson said, “I think it’s going to allow SG-1 to continue, in a way.”

The interview doesn’t cover Higginson’s own reduction in appearances for Season Four, which will begin filming in March.

Higginson said that she was shocked that SG-1 was cancelled, but believes that producing one show will benefit the stories for Atlantis, stating, “Now all the writing will just be focused on one show, so I think it’ll be interesting, too, to have the production focused on one show. That will definitely make it richer and … just tighter.”

Cooper, Wright Talk Stargate's Future

On the new official Stargate site, Robert C. Cooper, Brad Wright, and others give lengthy interviews about where the Stargate franchise is headed. Included in the RCC and BW portions are many new spoilers for the remainder of Season 10 of SG-1, the SG-1 movies, and big news on Atlantis casting. Those interviews appear to have been conducted in December, with Wright’s before Cooper’s. Since the site requires high bandwidth connection, and even then has a hard time getting through an entire interview, we provide a summary of the points of most interest here. Warning: major spoilers!

Robert C. Cooper

  • SG-1’s final episode, “Unending”, will have the team trapped on board a ship, within a time dilation field, for 50 years. We will see how the relationships might develop and evolve. It represents one possible future given a certain set of circumstances. RCC wrote and directed the episode because he wanted to be on set during the emotional final days of filming. He feels it is a fitting end to the 1-hour series era of SG-1. At the end of the episode, the events will be “undone”.
  • The pay-off of the Ori storyline will be in the first DVD movie, which RCC is writing and directing. He had planned it as an arc for Season 11, but will now resolve it in a “very exciting” two hours. MGM has financed the movies based only on projected DVD sales, but are looking for broadcast deals as well. The funding for each of the 2 DVD movies is more than it would be for 2 episodes, but still nowhere near a feature-type budget, so they will be using their creativity to make it look big on a TV-movie budget. All of the main cast have signed for the movie, and they have contacted RDA about appearing as O’Neill in one or both movies. No work on whether that will work out business-wise or not.
  • Because the first DVD movie will be a continuation of Season 10, the DVD will include a 1-hour special on the history of Stargate so that viewers who haven’t seen all of Stargate will know what is going on. The special will be called “Stargate Mythology” and will include material on how real-world ancient mythology has played into the Stargate shows.
  • The second movie is more of a standalone story, although, if the actors are available, it will bring back a lot of fan favorites. The intention is to get fans used to the idea of SG-1 movies, to whet their appetites for more.
  • The movies will not be tied to an exact length, so they can edit them to have all the scenes and shots that make sense for the stories, rather than being tied to 44:15 like they were for episodes. They will also be shot in widescreen 16×9 format without ‘protecting’ the center of the screen, for a movie-like feel.
  • RCC and BW will continue as executive producers of Atlantis even though Joe Mallozzi and Paul Mullie are the show-runners. RCC will be there every day in his office.
  • The movies will keep RCC and BW busy until the summer time. They are writing now, planning of 4 weeks of shooting for each starting in mid April, then the usual post-production.
  • In the meantime they are working on the concept of the 3rd series with MGM. If all goes well, it would go into production sometime in the summer for airing at the beginning of 2008. RCC would only say the series maintains the spirit of Stargate, but opens up a whole new “universe.” They have no idea where the series might air. It is too early to say anything like that.
  • Amanda Tapping will be joining the cast of Atlantis for 14 episodes in Season 4. He recognizes some SGA fans won’t be happy to have SG-1 characters crossing over, but he believes it will encourage SG-1 fans to watch and that AT is a great actress and Carter a very likable character.
  • RCC feels it is totally up to Sci Fi to schedule and promote Atlantis to make sure people know it’s on and watch it.

Brad Wright

  • The first SG-1 DVD movie will be called Stargate: The Ark of Truth. In it, the team will travel to the Ori galaxy. The Ori arc will end with this movie.
  • The second DVD movie will be called Stargate Continuum. It will be a time travel story. He wants to prove it could be the first in a string that could continue the SG-1 legacy. It will feature characters who are dead in current show canon, but can be brought back because of time travel. He would really like RDA to be in one or both movies, but it’s up to RDA and the business side to work it out. At the time of the interview, Beau Bridges was not yet signed for the movies. Wright hopes that Martin Wood will direct the second movie.
  • He thinks Season 3 of SGA was the best so far and hopes and expects Atlantis to go beyond Season 4. He is also very committed to helping and remaining involved.
  • He is very relieved they are making 24 hours of TV this year (20 hours of Atlantis plus 4 hours of DVD movies) instead of 40. That was a ‘stupid’ amount of work to do both shows at once for three years with only one additional writer.
  • He does not feel going direct to DVD for the movies is a bad thing. As home theaters become so good, more and more people prefer to watch movies on DVD. The 16×9 widescreen format gives them a lot more freedom to film in a movie style as well, rather than having to keep all the action in the center of the screen for 4×3 TV’s.
  • If the Stargate Worlds on-line game does well [financially], it will really help the franchise continue.
  • Amanda Tapping will be joining the cast. They have wanted to bring her over for a while, but with SG-1 getting renewed each year, they couldn’t do it.
  • Torri Higginson will be back for some period of time in Season 4, but she will be a recurring character (!). Wright said this in a rather surprising way: that Torri will be back in S4 for some episodes, as if that were good or unexpected news.

Jewel Staite Speaks Out on Atlantis Role

Atlantis Casting Spoilers follow

Last week Jewel Staite wrote in her blog about her recurring role as Dr. Keller, MD, in Season 4 of Stargate Atlantis. She confirmed the departure of Paul McGillion from the cast but said she does not feel her character will be “replacing” Beckett in the way fans have assumed. She will be playing a prodigy/genius doctor, which is presumably a way to explain her young age (she is 24 yrs old). She asked fans not to “hate” her for taking the job that was offered to her. Obviously she had nothing to do with Carson’s demise, so that seems a quite reasonable request. 🙂

Apart from Jewel’s role, fans continue to campaign for Carson’s reinstatement full-time at SaveCarsonBeckett.com.

SG-1 and SGA Casting Updates/Spoilers

There were at least 3 Stargate-related conventions going on this weekend, and various bits of news came out of them related to casting of the remaining S10/S3 episodes, as well as upcoming SG-1 DVD movies and Season 4 of Atlantis.

  • N. John Smith confirmed at Collectormania in Manchester, UK, that Carson Beckett will disappear in the second half of Season 3, and that Paul McGillion won’t be a cast regular in Season 4. He did promise Beckett would return for some number of future episodes. This confirms rumors that have been floating for months, and fans have already started a campaign to make their objections to this change clear. Visit SaveCarsonBeckett.com for more info.
  • Amanda Tapping said at the GABIT convention in the UK that she will be appearing in “a few” episodes of Atlantis next year, but that it wouldn’t be a full-time role. Michael Shanks said at Creation Con that he has heard we will be seeing a familiar SG-1 face on Atlantis, but that it won’t be him. We assume he was referring to Tapping. Torri Higginson declined to give any details on who might be crossing over, but was supportive of the idea. She also said she had no idea what is in store for Weir in Season 4.
  • David Hewlett at Creation Con mentioned that Michael Beach, formerly of ER, has joined the cast of Atlantis, presumably as a recurring character. David used the term “has joined the cast”. His role in SGA is already listed in Beach’s wikipedia entry, but might be new to many fans. David said that Michael is very good a long passages of dialog. He will appear in Season 3, since he has already filmed at least one episode. It’s not known how many episodes he will be in.
  • Cliff Simon at Creation Burbank said he expects to reprise his role as Ba’al in at least one of the two SG-1 DVD movies.
  • Michael Shanks at Creation Burbank seemed quite committed to being in both movies, and in movies beyond that if the DVD’s sell well and MGM asks for more.

Visit our forum for brief snippets on the conventions from attendees, and stay tuned for a complete A Dog’s Breakfast Screening and Creation Burbank report.
