FILM/TV AWARDS ANNOUNCEMENT – The TCON Promotional Society announced the winners of the Fifth Annual Constellation Awards, honouring excellence in science fiction film and television, at ceremonies held on Saturday at the Sheraton Parkway Toronto North Hotel hosted by Teddy Wilson and Ajay Fry of InnerSPACE.
Inception was the evening’s big winner. Taking home two trophies for Best Film and Best Overall Script, Christopher Nolan’s story of subconscious industrial espionage had led film nominations with six. However, it failed to cash in on any of its three acting nominations. Best Male Performance went to Johnny Depp for Alice in Wonderland and Best Female Performance went to Chloe Grace Moretz for Kick-Ass, beating out past winners Robert Downey Jr. and Emma Watson.
In the television categories, Doctor Who – despite a record leading nine nominations – was virtually shut out, bringing home a single victory in the Technical Accomplishment category for composer Murray Gold. In another upset, Best Series went to the recently cancelled series Stargate Universe. Anna Torv scored a Best Female Performance win for CityTV’s Fringe, while Jewel Staite was on hand to present her friend and Firefly co-star, Adam Baldwin, with his Best Male Performance trophy for his work on Chuck.
Actor Paul McGillion of Stargate Atlantis presented the most prestigious award of the evening, Outstanding Canadian Contribution to Science Fiction Film and Television in 2010, to this year’s hosts, Teddy Wilson and Ajay Fry for their work on SPACE’s flagship entertainment show InnerSPACE. After the ceremonies, Wilson announced to his fans via Twitter: “Such ridiculous fun! I can’t believe we won an award!”
