Précis

Since the defeat of Anubis, the fallen Goa'uld System Lord Ba'al has been comfortably hiding out on Earth, flourishing as an aggressive capitalist - and criminal - and laying the foundations of a new empire. Episode Spoilers

Note: Latest updates are in color.

The following is a collection of spoilers gathered from various sources. Keep in mind that these interpretations are subject to change.

Carter is back at the SGC and has teamed up with Daniel and Agent Barrett to investigate the disappearances of top executives of the company Sentinel Media Enterprises. They disappeared about the same time as Osiris' ship was destroyed (8.14 "Full Alert"). That ship was under the control of members of The Trust who had been implanted with Goa'uld symbiotes and who had attempted to destroy Earth by causing a nuclear war. The fear is that now there may be several Goa'uld on Earth gaining strength, especially after another executive disappears.

It is also revealed that a Jaffa was found on Earth who had been in the service of Lord Yu. This Jaffa, now dead, had been sent by Gerak, one of the leaders of the Free Jaffa Nation, to find Ba'al! Gerak had intelligence information that Ba'al fled to Earth when he was defeated in the battle for Dakara (8.17 "Reckoning Part 2" and 8.18 "Threads"). Ba'al could have been on Earth for as long as nine months!

Gerak is strongly opposed to any alliance with the Tau'ri and the Tok'ra, whom he views just as bad as the Goa'uld. There are other members of the Jaffa High Council who do not agree with Gerak, including a Jaffa named Tebrash. Gerak sent the Jaffa to track down Ba'al in secret, completely ignoring the alliance that they had with the Tau'ri in the war for the Jaffa’s freedom. Gerak also calls Teal'c's loyalty into question.

It appears that either the Prometheus or the Daedalus is preventing the Jaffa from entering into Earth's space to continue their pursuit of Ba'al (which Gerak was doing in secret).

Action locations include Dakara and Earth.

"Ex Deus [Machina] sees her [Carter] in the thick of things - reunited with an old friend." — Joseph Mallozzi in his Q&A thread at GateWorld. Carter's "old friend" is most likely NID Agent Malcolm Barrett, not Ba'al.

"We cut Ex Deus Machina (Chris Judge did such a great job that I immediately went down to set after watching the Director’s cut and told him as much)," Joseph Mallozzi said in his GateWorld Blog. When asked which episode of the first half of the new season showed the character of Teal'c and the acting talents of Christopher Judge the best, Mallozzi answered in his Q&A thread on GateWorld, "To be perfectly honest, Teal'c has a story arc that runs over the first half of the season that makes it difficult to pinpoint one single episode in this case. Every season, Chris just gets better and better - and he has really flexed his acting muscles in the front-half of season 9."
