  1. “Just got the live+7 numbers for Intervention, the season 2 premiere. Wow. We jumped 78% from the live number, about 40% from the liv+SD. That’s a lot of eyeballs. Of course that isn’t even counting those who are viewing the show through alternate platforms (ie. netflix, iTunes, and other download options).” — Joseph Mallozzi, October 19, 2010.
  2. “The ratings of the back half of season 2 will have absolutely no bearing on whether or not Brad and co. proceed with movies.” — Joseph Mallozzi, March 5, 2011.

Stargate Universe: 2.16 "The Hunt"

You know it's serious when Varro is asked to join in THE HUNT (MGM)
Tonight at 10 PM ET on Syfy—and later this week in Canada and Australia—is Stargate Universe episode 2.16 “The Hunt,” written by Joseph Mallozzi (and Paul Mullie) and directed by Andy Mikita.

“Hey, my second to last episode of Stargate: Universe, The Hunt, airs this week,” writer Mallozzi posted in his weblog. “It’s an interesting episode in that I tried very hard to make sure most every character got the opportunity to make a contribution. I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts and will make it a point to field your questions after the episode airs.” (Your questions can be directed to Mallozzi directly in the comments section of his weblog.)

Because Mallozzi wrote the episode, he shared with his weblog readers all of the ups and downs he experienced during its production (much of his journey is included in the Production Notes section in the episode’s guide in our Stargate Wiki). He even shared some on-location photos that he took while on a “field trip” to the famous Vancouver forests during the shoot! The weather posed a challenge, but the atmosphere created by shooting at night gave the location and story a “surreal alien feel,” something Mallozzi has enjoyed adding into his scripts as a fan of horror. There will be jump-in-you-seat moments, guaranteed, but there will also be other types of scenes to balance it out, such as “comic beats peppered throughout.”

The episode has an “old-fashioned” Stargate feel to it: the team ‘gates to a planet, gets in trouble, gets out of trouble, and then goes home. Well, at least most of them go home…

Tune in tonight to find out who makes it and who doesn’t, and afterwards, make sure to rejoin us here for our episode poll on the front page.

  • Jonas Quinn as a member of SG-1Jonas Quinn Fans! – Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi had stated in an earlier weblog entry that there was supposed to be a mention of Jonas Quinn in last week’s episode “Seizure.” SG-1 fans who tuned in to find out what has become of the former team member were disappointed! No mention at all was made, although we do know that his home world survived the Ori invasion. In response to fans’ disappointment and questions whether or not it was even considered to mention Jonas, Mallozzi wrote, “Yes, in fact I gave a note at the script stage that, at the very least, some mention should be made about the fact that Jonas Quinn had retired from public office. Don’t know what happened but it obviously didn’t make it onscreen.”

If you’re in the US, don’t forget to catch Joe Flanigan starring in Ferocious Planet on Syfy network, tonight! It airs at 9 pm/8 pm Central — check your local listings.

Joe has done some great interviews lately, including these:

Pazsaz.com — Joe doesn’t expect his recent Fox movie, Change of Plans, to become a series, so he’s looking for new recurring or regular roles

We’ll add more links to this post; wanted to get it up before the show starts!

David Hewlett On Returning To Stargate

McKay on Stargate UniverseDr. Rodney McKay returns to Stargate this week with a guest appearance on Stargate Universe, and TVSquad took the opportunity to interview actor David Hewlett about that experience, his views of why SGU didn’t succeed in the ratings, and what he’s up to now. He lets his geek flag fly when speaking of why Rodney McKay is a fan favorite:

I always feel like there’s a little bit of McKay in everybody. Everybody wants to be the guy who has the answers and who isn’t afraid to admit that he’s a genius, social niceties be damned! I mean I love science fiction because it takes me out of this world. And with McKay, he’s the scientist who has spent his entire life reading about this stuff and now he’s getting to live it. In a way that’s what all of us want. We’ve done the reading, we’ve done the research, we’ve done the dreaming, and we want to be McKay — we want to be the guy who saves the day because we know all this stuff. We want all this nerd-dom to pay off. And McKay is the resulting image, he’s the iconic figure of the nerd who’s done his homework and now he gets to go off and save the universe.

David was his usual perky self throughout the interview, so it’s well worth a read over at TVSquad!

Jason Momoa On How Stargate Helped

Jason Momoa as ConanJason Momoa continues to get lots of press thanks to his leading role in the upcoming Conan the Barbarian film remake, and for playing Khal Drogo in HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones. He has two new interviews, at Huffington Post and DenOfGeek, with the latter being especially long and illuminating. There he speaks in detail about the filming experience both for Conan and Game of Thrones, noting he hates horses, loves playing the “bad good guy”, and won’t mind if Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn’t like his portrayal of Conan. He credits his four years on Stargate Atlantis with preparing him to play Conan and Drogo, even though the roles are very different:

How did working on Game Of Thrones compare to Stargate?

Well, there were no horses and I got to wear clothes, for one thing. [laughs] I loved Stargate. I had such a great time and it was such a great training ground. It set me up to play the lead of a movie, you know, so it’s really a phenomenon for four years to be with a family and experiment.

You do a movie, you meet everyone, you go from place to place. It’s like joining a circus. Being on a show for four years, you know everyone. You know the grips. You feel safe and comfortable. You can play with your character a lot. It evolves over a long period of time. It was a great training ground that set me up for Drogo and Conan.

And also, being in that sci-fi fantasy genre, there’s no limitations to what you can do. If I’m sick or drugged out, I can play it like heroin times ten, or crack times 20. You can go to places that aren’t realistic, and that’s fun.

It’s worked out that I’m in these genres and I don’t mind it. It’s fun.

Visit DenOfGeek to read the entire interview!

Stargate Universe: 2.15 "Seizure" (Atlantis Crossover)

Robert Picardo as Richard WoolseyDavid Hewlett as Dr. Rodney McKay

Richard Woolsey and Dr. Rodney McKay are involved in politics
and science in SEIZURE

Tonight at 10 PM ET on Syfy—and later this week in Canada and Australia—is Stargate Universe episode 2.15 “Seizure,” written by Remi Aubuchon and directed by Helen Shaver.

This episode has been called the “Atlantis Crossover” because David Hewlett and Robert Picardo guest star as Dr. Rodney McKay and Richard Woolsey, respectively, but the city of Atlantis is not being highlighted in the story. Instead, the planet Langara is visited by McKay, Woolsey, and Col. David Telford as they negotiate to use the planet’s naquadria-powered Stargate to send supplies to Destiny. This planet’s name should sound familiar to SG-1’s Jonas Quinn/Corin Nemec fans, as this is the former team member’s home world. Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi stated that “there should be” a mention of what has become of Quinn after his world was overtaken by the Ori in the SG-1 episode 10.07 “Counterstrike.”

Langaran Stargate
Langara's Stargate Facility (MGM)
Another major guest star in tonight’s episode is Victor Garber (Alias, Titanic), acclaimed stage and film actor, who portrays Langaran Ambassador Ovirda. The Langarans as a whole have recovered from the Ori War, and have even built a more elaborate facility in which to house their Stargate, but Ovirda is wary of Earth’s use of their Stargate to dial the ninth chevron because, admittedly, the previous uses of a planet’s naquadria core have resulted in utter destruction! To mount even greater tension is the threat of the Lucian Alliance who may also wish to use the Langaran Stargate to invade Destiny.

It’s a jam-packed episode that is sure to touch on much of the mythology of the entire franchise, including the newest storyline concerning Amanda Perry and Ginn, who are now part of the crew as avatars! After viewing, make sure to rejoin us here for our episode poll on the front page.
