Geopolitical Structure and History
Tens of thousands of years ago, the Alterans, also known as the Ancients, lived in the galaxy where Ver Isca's planet is. Eventually, many Alterans left for another galaxy, and the ones who remained ascended and became the Ori.
The village of Ver Isca is made up of several stone buildings. At the center of the village is an "Ara", which is a type of altar. The Ara has a raised stone straight channel about four foot high that slopes, rounding a small circular area of the design before sloping still further to several wide concentric stone channels, about one foot high. In the center of the circular maze is a yoke-like bench. Those who do not follow the will of the Ori, as determined by Seevis, the Administrator of Ver Isca, were punished by being shackled to the Ara where they could be subject to anything from public humiliation to starvation to even the fire of the Ori.
After Vala disappeared through the collapsing Kallana Stargate, she was found unconscious on the outskirts of Ver Isca by Tomin, an infirm, quiet man, who took her home and nursed her back to health. Although Tomin was a devout follower of the Ori religion, Vala's observations were that the Ver Isca villagers were a bit less strict in their following of Origin than they had been in Ver Ager.
The Administrator, Seevis, ran the local tavern. Various vices, including prostitution, were allowed, but only under Seevis's supervision. Seevis was doing the work of the gods by making sure this village had every reason in the world to prostrate, making him a very rich and very powerful man in the process. Such endeavors also helped to hide Seevis's true role as head of the resistence in Ver Isca. He had contacts even among the acolytes in Celestis, who brought him the Ancient Communication Terminal and stones used by Daniel and Vala after the Prior confiscated them from Ver Ager.
Outside Ver Isca, the Priors supervised the building of ten Ori warships. The area outside the village was heavily wooded with hilly topography. The Ori worshippers were preparing for battle against the unbelievers in the Milky Way Galaxy. Tomin left home everyday after he and Vala married to work on the warships. Vala, mysteriously impregnated without copulation, remained at home. One day Tomin returned showing his infirmity was healed and proud to be conscripted for the Ori crusade.
Seevis and the barmaid Denya were suspicious of Vala, so they tested her faith. After she passed, they revealed their roles in the Resistence to Vala. They also explained that during the launch, the ships were rigged to explode. Vala, in turn, explained who she really was. Knowing their plan of sabotage and fearing for Tomin's safety, she tried to get him to stay home with her during the launch, but could not. Vala joined Seevis and Denya to watch from a distance, but the plan failed. The trio quickly headed back to the village to use the terminal and stones.
Vala contacted the SGC using Daniel Jackson's body as a conduit and explained all that had transpired. The transmission was cut off when Tomin returned and shot the device. He then killed both Seevis and Denya, pursuant to the Prior's instructions. Vala convinced him to spare her and agreed to leave Ver Isca with him as he travelled to the Milky Way Galaxy.
