SGU Season Two in the Solutions Stargate Wiki

SGUSeason One of Stargate Universe is nearing its close as the two-part season finale “Incursion” begins next week, June 4, and ends June 11 on Syfy and Space. These episodes have long been “in the can” and now the writers are busy putting together Season Two.

Thus far, we have the names of the first 14 out of 20 episodes, and we’ve created episode guides for each of them in our Stargate Wiki. For the sake of keeping spoilers to a minimum here, let’s just say that Season Two continues the story arc started in last week’s “Subversion” (which Space will be showing tonight at 10 PM ET).

As each new episode is given a title, we’ll create the remaining guides, but in the meantime, we’ll put select quotes about their development from Joseph Mallozzi’s blog (the main source for all of this production information) on the season’s main index page. Enjoy!

Ask Julia Benson Your Questions

Vanessa James in PAIN
Julia Benson as Vanessa James (MGM/Movie Web)
Once again, executive producer Joseph Mallozzi is opening his weblog up to fan questions directed to someone attached to the production of Stargate Universe. This time, you’re invited to ask Julia Benson (Lt. Vanessa James) your questions:

One of the many great things about having a blog on wordpress is the Blog Stats section that allows you to track everything from daily views and incoming links to search engine terms and referrers. And, I just discovered this weekend, if you click on the Top Posts & Pages header, you’ll be directed to a list of every one of your posts ranked according to the traffic it has received to date.

So what, according to wordpress, has been my most popular entry of all time? The breakdown of the Atlantis season that might-have-been in my An AU Season 6! entry? The Amanda Tapping Q&A? That Long Overdue Rant?

Guess again. Here are my top ten most popular posts to date:

[…]

1. October 22, 2009: Julia Benson! Jennifer Spence! Birthday Swag! The Weird Food Purchase of the Day!: Granted, this entry had a bit of everything – Carl, pretty actresses, a video of me sampling one of the hottest hot sauces out there, a picture of the bacon-chocolate chip cookies sent in by a fan – but what the hell made it so damn popular? Well, if you compare and contrast the entries occupying the top two slots, you’ll notice one like variable: Julia Benson. Cross-reference that with the top three Search Engine Terms used to reach my blog –

3. “joe mallozzi”: Makes sense.

2. “joseph mallozzi”: Makes even more sense given that that’s how I’m credited onscreen.

1. “julia benson”: Garnering about twice as many searches as “joseph mallozzi”.

What does this tell us? Well, it tells us that there are a lot of fans of strong, military women out there. What else would it tell us?

It also tells us that it’s high time I invited actress Julia Benson to guest here and answer some fan question in her very own Q&A.

So if you’ve got questions for the Julia, start posting!

To submit your questions, do the following:

  1. Go to this entry in Mallozzi’s weblog: My most popular entry is… Really? Yet another guest blogger announcement!
  2. Scroll all the way down until you get to the comments section.
  3. Fill in the form. Make sure to proofread your entry because you won’t have a chance to edit it after you submit it.
  4. Click on “Submit Comment”.

Mallozzi reviews all comments before they get posted, so it might take a little while for your entry to make it through.

SGU This Week: "Subversion" (Special Guest Stars, Spoilers)

Stargate Universe episode “Subversion”, written by Paul Mullie (and Joseph Mallozzi) and directed by Alex Chapple, premieres tonight (May 21) on Syfy at 9 PM ET.

The Story: The Beginning of a Multi-Episode Arc

From the beginning of the series, we’ve been left in the dark about who attacked Icarus Base and why. Well, tonight, we just might get some answers.

Icarus explodes and takes Lucian Alliance fleet with it in AIR (MGM)
Icarus explodes and takes Lucian Alliance fleet with it in AIR (MGM)

The assumption has been that it was the Lucian Alliance who attacked and lost an entire fleet of ships and all aboard when things went wonky and the Icarus planet exploded. More details about the Alliance were included in a “Dr. Jackson” orientation video (see below) and in a scene from the extended version of “Air” (now available on DVD and Blu-ray):

[Eli and Rush are in the Control Interface Room, discussing the ship and the particulars of their situation.]

ELI
Who is this Lucian Alliance, anyway?

RUSH
Where did that come from?

ELI
I just want to know who to blame for this.

RUSH
They’re a human coalition made up from various Milky Way planets, formed in the power vacuum left behind when the Goa’uld were defeated. They’re criminals mostly…street gang with starships.

ELI
How’d they find out about Icarus? Wasn’t it supposed to be like double secret?

RUSH
I suspect there was a leak somewhere, someone working on the inside. The legend surrounding the ninth chevron has been floating around our galaxy for some time now. We found that it meant various things to different cultures. Some said it was a key to the universe itself, and once unlocked, you would gain untold power. Now if the Lucian Alliance knew that we discovered the address and the means to dial, they’d want it.

Destiny in FAITH (MGM)
The Lucian Alliance will want Destiny once they find out about its existence (MGM)

ELI
This ship…is a source of untold power?

RUSH
No, no, no, not literally. It’s more to do with what it’s doing…the information it’s capable of gathering.

ELI
If you know how to use it…

RUSH
Yeah.

ELI
That’s what you’re after, isn’t it? Why you risked everything to get here; you think this ship is gonna make you all-powerful or something crazy like that…

RUSH
Eli, if I could find a way to send all these people home safely and then return with a properly-skilled team to pursue this mission as intended, why wouldn’t I want to do that?

ELI
I don’t know.

RUSH
Aha…

A few members of the Lucian Alliance were introduced in Stargate SG-1 in the Season Eight episode “Prometheus Unbound”. They were after Earth’s first space battle cruiser Prometheus and since that time have tried to capture the Odyssey, the Daedalus-class starship that held even more power than its predecessor. During the years of the Ori War, the Alliance had a tenuous relationship with SG-1 until they lost starships and addictive kassa crops (the Alliance were druglords, too) due to SG-1’s interference. Eventually, war was declared. SG-1 then had a hand in creating chaos within the organization itself when they sent the assassin Odai Ventrell to eliminate the Alliance’s leader Netan. His seconds were left to fight among themselves for the territories that would make them more powerful, and a few years later, someone with a large fleet within this new organization attacked Icarus. (You can read more about the Lucian Alliance in our Stargate Wiki.)

The Story Behind the Scenes: Special Guest Stars

Michael Shanks and Richard Dean Anderson return to Stargate as both their characters are involved in the investigation into how the Lucian Alliance found out about Icarus and why they attacked. Dr. Daniel Jackson, as a member of SG-1, has had an extensive history with the Lucian Alliance, and they even put out a bounty on him, first as “Hans Olo” and then as a member of SG-1. According to what his dream version told Rush in “Human”, the Stargate Program had a contact within the Lucian Alliance who gave them information about the planet that Icarus Base was eventually built upon.

Not pictured above, but another familiar face among SG-1 and SGA fans is that of Mike Dopud, who played the assassin Odai Ventrell himself in “Bounty” (and the runner Kiryk in SGA’s “Tracker”, among other roles). We’re not sure if he’s reprising his role, or if he’s creating a new character among the ranks of the Lucian Alliance (some sources say he’ll be playing Varro). We’ll have to wait and see on that one.

New to Stargate is Rhona Mitra, who comes from Nip/Tuck, Boston Legal, and The Practice, to name but a few. She is portraying Commander Kiva, one of the new leaders within the Lucian Alliance. She’s the contact for “the someone working on the inside” who leaked information to the Alliance about the Icarus Project. Who is this “someone”? We’ll start to get some answers as tonight’s episode begins a major multi-episode story arc that carries through to the season finale and into Season Two, so make sure you tune in!

NOTE: Syfy will be showing movies next Friday, May 28, instead of a new episode of SGU in celebration of the Memorial Day weekend. Universe will return with “Incursion Part 1” on Friday, June 4, and then Syfy will broadcast “Incursion Part 2”, the season finale, on June 11.

NOTE: Viewers in Australia will be getting “Subversion” on the Sci Fi Channel on Friday, May 28, at 8:30 PM, and the UK’s Sky One viewers will see it Tuesday, June 1, at 8:00 PM. Additionally, Canada’s Space has delayed airing the episode until next Friday, May 28, at 10 PM ET.

[spoiler intro=”Official Episode Summary”]Dr. Rush has a disturbing dream in which he is back on Earth, divulging sensitive information at a covert meeting of the Lucian Alliance. But, strangely, he does so as Colonel Telford.

He confides this unsettling dream to Colonel Young who wonders if there may have been some residual memory overlap during the doctor’s switch with Telford two days before. Suspecting that Telford may be a spy for the Alliance, Rush convinces Young to let him trade places with the Colonel again. Using the communications stones Rush returns to Earth hoping to find some way to confirm his hunch. Meanwhile, Young has a plan of his own, but will need the assistance of General Jack O’Neil and Dr. Daniel Jackson.

Mallozzi's Weblog: Alaina Huffman Fan Q&A

Stargate Universe star Alaina Huffman (Lt. Tamara Johansen) answered questions submitted by fans to executive producer Joseph Mallozzi’s weblog. The time between her receiving the questions and sending back the responses was so short that even Mallozzi was amazed. Her explanation, “Moms. We multi-task :).”

Huffman answered a diverse assortment of questions, ranging from her character TJ’s story arc involving her real-life pregnancy to how she styles her hair. There’s something for everyone in between, so make sure to check it out at May 16, 2010: Actress Alaina Huffman Answers Your Questions!

Other SGU actors who have questions to answer include Elyse Levesque (Chloe Armstrong) and Jamil Walker Smith (MSgt. Ronald Greer), and Mallozzi plans on getting others involved soon. He doesn’t limit the Q&As to the actors in the regular cast; department heads, guest actors, directors, fellow writers/producers, and many others who work behind the scenes have also had their turns.

SGU This Week: "Pain" (Spoilers)

Stargate Universe episode “Pain”, written by Carl Binder and directed by William Waring, premieres tonight (May 14) on Syfy at 9 PM ET and on Space at 10 PM ET!

The Story

No one can deny that the stress levels on the Destiny are high and that some people can handle them better than others, but when an unprecedented number of what appear to be breakdowns—in the form of unsettling hallucinations—occur concurrently, it’s time to look for other causes. The question is, Will Lt. Tamara Johansen be able to find the cure before someone is hurt…or worse?

The Story Behind the Scenes

Vanessa James in PAIN
Julia Benson (Lt. Vanessa James) was nominated for a Leo Award for her performance in PAIN (MGM/Movie Web)
Stargate fans are already familiar with the significant role a supporting character can play in the telling of a story. Where would SG-1 have been without Apophis or Ba’al or Adria or Jacob Carter or Bra’tac or Sgt. Walter Harriman? Where would Sheppard’s team have been without Dr. Radek Zelenka or Major Evan Lorne or Todd the Wrath or Michael Kenmore? In the case of Stargate Universe, some of the stories we’ve seen thus far were enhanced by the presence of Dr. Jeremy Franklin or Dr. Dale Volker or Adam Brody or Dr. Lisa Park or Lt. Vanessa James.

This dependence on supporting characters comes to the fore when we look at the story “Pain” and at the evidence that two of the three nominations for “Best Supporting Male/Female in a Dramatic Series” for the 2010 Leo Awards are for performances in this particular episode: Julia Benson as Lt. Vanessa James and Patrick Gilmore as Dr. Dale Volker.

In his weblog, creative consultant Joseph Mallozzi wrote about Benson’s award-worthy performance: “Speaking of our impressive cast, I want to make mention of yet another recurring player who has really stepped up over the course of this first season. Julia Benson … plays the role of Second Lieutenant Vanessa James and, like much of our supporting cast, impressed early and continues to do so with performances that have won her the respect and confidence of the entire writing-producing team. I mention Julia because we were watching the director’s cut of Pain the other day, an episode in which she delivers one stunner of a scene. I’m also looking forward to her nice, meaty moments in an upcoming episode.”

Dr. Dale Volker in SABOTAGE
Patrick Gilmore (Dr. Dale Volker) was also nominated for a Leo Award for his performance in PAIN (MGM)
For Gilmore’s performance, we can point to writer Carl Binder’s Twitter for his impression, “Gold star for @PatrickGilmore today. Great, creepy, unsettling work.” And Gilmore responded, “Thanks to @cpbinder for the ‘Pain’ & the gold star. Crazy last day of the episode. Bruised forehead & an exciting #SGU episode to prove it.”

Adding to this praise, Mallozzi described what he was feeling after viewing the Day 2 Mix, “Joel Goldsmith did his usual spectacular job and I was particularly impressed with the moody and unsettling score for Pain. It really ratchets up the tension. And, speaking of tension, what happens to Volker…it’s enough to give me nightmares. Actor Patrick Gilmore’s performance was terrific – in a creepy, frisson-inducing way.”

Apparently, editor Brad Rines hit the mark and then some, as well, since he too was nominated for a Leo for his work for this episode (for “Best Picture Editing in a Dramatic Series”).

Putting all of this noteworthy work together from several aspects of the production, it sounds like we should take extra care to prepare for a pretty intense ride!

[spoiler intro=”Official Episode Summary”]A few members of the Destiny crew begin experiencing disturbingly realistic hallucinations bringing their personal fears or desires to life. Some worry that the stress of life on board the ship has finally begun to trigger nervous breakdowns.

After isolating those affected Lt. Tamara Johansen believes the hallucinations are related to the last planet the away team visited. But just as she thinks she’s contained those at risk, she discovers the cause of the hallucinations is transferring to other members of the crew. When the hallucinations become life threatening, she and the crew must track down whatever is causing the episodes before someone dies as a result.
