Amanda Tapping Recalls First Stargate Days

Amanda Tapping as Captain Samantha Carter in “Children of the Gods”

Stargate star Amanda Tapping talked with Moviehole during the Vancouver Creation Convention in April about her first days in costuming at Stargate SG-1, back when the show was being produced for airing on the pay channel Showtime. It’s a rather heartbreaking account, but at the same time, shows what these characters meant to the actors even at the beginning of filming.

“The very beginning, my very first wardrobe call, I was asked to put on a push up bra and a tiny little tank top as my very first wardrobe fitting and I panicked because I thought ‘oh my god, they cast the wrong person,'” she recalled. “I’m not that and this character isn’t that and if they wanted a blonde boobie bombshell they cast the wrong girl.

“I remember crying in Christina McQuarrie’s little wardrobe change room and saying ‘why are they asking for this?’ I was told I was going to go up to the executive producers and show them this little look and I said ‘no, I can’t do it, maybe they’ve made a huge mistake.’

“It turns out it wasn’t Brad [Wright] or Rob [Cooper]—or Brad and Jonathan [Glassner] at the time—it was networks and whatever; it was different people who were making that decision, but I freaked and I guess Christina went up to them and [said] ‘she’s uncomfortable and this is not what the character is to her and maybe you can come down and explain to her why you want this incredibly strong, feisty woman to be this,’ and so they said ‘Don’t worry about it.’

“In some ways it was very painful and especially as a young actress, it was my first huge gig and I didn’t want to blow it, but by the same token, I was bawling; I was sitting in the wardrobe room crying, saying ‘this is not what this character is. I don’t see this character as this and if we’re going to cartoon this character then cast somebody different.'”

Fortunately, Tapping’s standing up for her character allowed her to produce a strong female role model that even she hopes her own daughter can look up to. “I think Sam is a great role model in that she is incredibly smart and unapologetic about it and that she’s strong and she’s loyal beyond measure. So many things that I admire about her that I would love for my daughter to take on.”

Now, over 12 years later, Tapping’s always willing to return to the Stargate sets, even after her success as the lead actor, director, and executive producer of her new hit series Sanctuary. The third SG-1 movie has been green-lit and Martin Wood is slated to direct Wright’s and Carl Binder’s script. “I don’t know anything about the movie. Michael [Shanks] and I were just talking about it; as far as we know, it’s going to be filming in the Fall and Rick [Richard Dean Anderson] [is] going to be in it and Chris [Judge] and Michael and I don’t know anything else beyond that.”

In the meantime, SG-1 fans are being treated to a new “final cut” of the episode that introduced the beloved cast: Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods: Final Cut is being released on July 21 in Region 1 (North America), July 27 in Region 2 (Europe), and August 5 in Region 4 (Australia). This “final cut” was created by Wright by going back to the original dailies and recreating the pilot with new visual effects and a new soundtrack by Joel Goldsmith. Additionally, Wright removed the female nudity that he felt didn’t belong in Stargate originally, but was asked to include on Showtime.

Update on Flanigan, Tapping, Phillips

Stargate stars Amanda Tapping and Joe Flanigan are featured in this week’s episode of The Jace Hall Show! The show is geared toward the gaming community, but it’s not unusual for Hall to have a chat with television and film celebrities. And be warned, sometimes these interviews show sides of people we never knew they had!

Episode 8:

But thats not ALL! Stargate Atlantis mega-star Joe Flanigan drops by the office for a meeting with Jace about our “V”ideo game show, and doesn’t want to leave until he gets to try something on for size himself.

Sci Fi Wire: Stargate Universe Guest Cast

Sci Fi Wire is reporting that veteran Stargate actors Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Gary Jones are confirmed as guest stars in the new television series Stargate Universe.

The “new” news about this announcement was that of Amanda Tapping’s guest appearance. We already were informed about the appearances of Anderson, Shanks, and Jones. Of these, Anderson is scheduled for the most guest appearances that we know of, according to the actor himself in a note published at his official website.

Additionally, Janelle Monáe, a Grammy-nominated recording artist, will play herself; “she and her band will perform “Many Moons” and “Sincerely,” two songs from her latest album, Metropolis,” according to the article. Also, Carlo Rota (24) plays Carl Strom, “head of the International Oversight Advisory, the civilian oversight committee that heads up the Atlantis Expedition.” Strom’s first mention is in the episode “Earth” (spoilers at link), which was written by Martin Gero.

Sci Fi Wire also mentions the casting of Christopher McDonald (Superhero Movie), who plays “U.S. senator Alan Armstrong, head of the International Oversight Committee that governs the Stargate program and father of Chloe Armstrong” (Elyse Levesque). We learned of his casting through Joseph Mallozzi’s weblog (but now we also know his character’s first name).

Stargate Universe is currently filming in Vancouver and is scheduled for a fourth quarter 2009 debut on the Syfy Channel. Visit our guide in the Stargate Wiki for updates.

Amanda Tapping Answers Fan Questions

Producer and writer Joseph Mallozzi has turned over his weblog to Amanda Tapping so that she could answer several pages’ worth of fan questions submitted by Mallozzi’s readers not too long ago. Tapping covered a lot of ground, including Stargate, Sanctuary, parenting, women in film, and on being a role model. Visit Amanda Tapping Answers Your Questions for a great read!

Tapping on Coming Back to Stargate

Stargate star Amanda Tapping was recently at the Sci Fi Channel Upfronts to represent her new show Sanctuary, but the subject of returning to Stargate is always at the top of interviewers’ lists of questions. When asked how eager she was to play Col. Samantha Carter again (for at least the third SG-1 movie being penned by Brad Wright and Carl Binder), Tapping said, “Oh, I love it. It’s such a comfortable place to go. We say this all the time with Stargate, but it’s such a family, and it’s just nice when the family gets back together. It’s very easy and it’s fun. You fall into that same crazy vibe, and it’s great.”

The last word on the movie has been that Brad Wright is currently reviewing the script that Carl Binder wrote based on their outline. They have been aiming to film the movie this spring or early summer, but it’s possible that this schedule has had to be revised due to the tight scheduling brought about by the production of Stargate Universe. This tight schedule has caused them to slide the filming of the first Atlantis movie until the fall, but it’s currently not known if it has affected the production of the SG-1 movie, which seems to be running on a different timetable than the Atlantis movie. The Atlantis movie’s script hasn’t been written yet, but is currently at the detailed outline stage.

Richard Dean Anderson and most of the Season Ten cast of SG-1 are expected to be included in the untitled O’Neill-centric story that Brad Wright pitched over a year ago to MGM. They’ve lined up Martin Wood to direct the film, but Wright said that MGM will not officially announce the movie until after certain deals have been made. It’s expected that this movie will be released directly to video like its two predecessors. The many months required to produce and market it probably mean that we won’t see this movie until 2010.
