Stargate Universe: 2.14 "Hope"

Stargate Universe Hope
Greer and Volker share a moment and more in HOPE.
Tonight at 10 PM ET on Syfy—and later this week in Canada and Australia—is Stargate Universe episode 2.14 “Hope,” written by Carl Binder.

Last week, we were left hanging—along with the crew—as to whether or not Senator Michaels and Dr. Andrew Covel were able to disarm the naquadria-enhanced bomb that the Lucian Alliance crashed into Homeworld Command in Washington, D.C. Someone is sitting in the communication room awaiting word from Earth, but after the radiation leak and Covel’s fooling around with the stones’ programming, further links might not even be possible.

And this problem couldn’t have had come at a worse time.

“Rob Cooper had an idea about what would our characters do if they had a serious medical emergency onboard Destiny,” writer Carl Binder explained in an interview with SciFi and TV Talk Blog. “This episode follows one in which there is a problem with the communication stones and they lose contact with Earth for a while. Now we have a situation in which one of Destiny‘s crew needs a major operation, but without the stones there’s no way to connect to Earth and get a doctor to take over and perform the operation, so T.J. has to do it.

“Meanwhile, there’s a second story unfolding at the same time involving a member of the Lucian Alliance and something that happened in an earlier story this season, ‘Malice.'”

Extraordinary things happen when extraordinary technology is involved, and tonight’s story highlights that very well. Tune in tonight to see how the Destiny crew must cope in life and death situations while totally cut off from Earth and then make sure to rejoin us here for our episode poll on the front page.

Stargate Planner: Week of March 28-April 3

We’ll update this article if something comes to our attention during the week. Also, if you’ve got more to add, please don’t hesitate to announce them in the comment section below.

Calendar

Monday,   March 28 Stargate Universe on Syfy at 10 PM ET with “Hope.”

Showcase EndgameMichael Shanks guest stars tonight at 10 PM ET/PT in the episode “The Caffeine Hit” of Canada’s new Showcase show Endgame. One of Stargate‘s guest stars is part of the regular cast, Veena Sood, who’s played an Abydonian and Dr. Kelly in episodes of SG-1. The show centers around the Russian-born former World Chess Champion Arkady Balagan, who, after witnessing the assassination of his fiancée and her high school friend in Vancouver, has become agoraphobic. He doesn’t leave the hotel where he lives. Such a life has caused him to amass a debt, so as a way to earn money, he uses his brilliant mind to solve mysteries. He has friends and associates, many who manage or work in the hotel in which he lives, who help him in his investigations. In “The Caffeine Hit,” Shanks plays “a desperate amnesiac” for whom Balagan “begins to unravel the man’s complicated identity.” When Shanks told his official website (MSOL) about the role, he mentioned that his character Casey Roman “finds out he may have been a real asshole.” MSOL has images of Shanks in his role as Roman in their gallery, but beware of spoilers! The episode will repeat on Thursday and Sunday. Visit their official website for more details.

Tuesday,   March 29 Stargate Universe on SPACE at 10 PM ET with “Hope.”
Wednesday,   March 30
Thursday,   March 31 Stargate Universe on Australia’s SciFi at 8:30 PM ET with “Hope.”

Jason Momoa as Conan

Jason Momoa will receive the 2011 CinemaCon Rising Star Award at the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas tonight. CinemaCon managing director Mitch Neuhauser said, “Bringing with him an already loyal fanbase from Stargate: Atlantis, Jason Momoa is sure to entertain audiences in the action adventure Conan the Barbarian. We can’t wait to see what this new leading action star will do in the future.” Not only does Momoa have the starring role in Conan the Barbarian, but he also has a recurring role in HBO’s new Game of Thrones series that will be premiering April 17. You’ll find links of interest for Momoa’s projects here at Solutions on his homepage in our Actors…Beyond the Event Horizon feature.

Friday,     April 1 Lou Diamond PhillipsLou Diamond Phillips is the host of a new franchise on the Military Channel that premieres tonight: An Officer and a Movie. Per the Military Channel’s press release, each installment “pairs Phillips with retired and active duty officers who lived through major battles or have an expertise in the conflicts depicted in notable Hollywood films. As each film makes its Military Channel premiere, AN OFFICER AND A MOVIE provides expert commentary that can only come from being ‘on the ground’ during the action as these officers reflect on the themes of that night’s film and also provide personal insight that puts each movie into a modern context.” In tonight’s movie at 8 PM ET, Phillips and retired Marine Col. Arthur Athens “discuss the themes behind the 1979 classic film The Great Santini, starring Robert Duvall, who was nominated for an Academy Award for this role. As the director of the U.S. Naval Academy’s Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership, the former Commandant of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Athens is uniquely able to comment on what it means to be a leader in the military and within a family’s home, where in his own life he has ten children.” For more on the airing schedule, visit http://military.discovery.com/.
Saturday,   April 2
Sunday,    April 3 HBO Game of Thrones PosterHBO will be airing a preview of Game of Thrones tonight at 9 PM ET. If you miss it, it will be available afterwards online and on demand. Jason Momoa has a recurring role as Khal Drogo, a warrior king. Game of Thrones is a “beyond R” translation of the George R.R. Martin book series A Song of Fire and Ice and is named after the first book, A Game of Thrones. As with Stargate, there exist several fan websites for the new show, two of them being Westeros.org and Winter-Is-Coming.net. HBO also has an official website. Solutions is maintaining a list of GoT links accessible from Momoa’s main page here.
“As Brad pointed out, the actor playing the part of Dr. Andrew Covel in episode #213 brings to four the number of guest stars who also appeared in the original Stargate movie.” — Joseph Mallozzi, August 20, 2010

Who are the four people who played in the original Stargate movie that have also appeared in Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, or Stargate Universe episodes?

If you said Erick Avari, Alexis Cruz, Richard Kind, and French Stewart, you’re correct! Avari and Cruz actually reprised their original movie roles as the Abydonians Kasuf and his son Skaara, respectively, in several Stargate SG-1 episodes. Richard Kind, who played Lucius Lavin in two Stargate Atlantis episodes, played Dr. Gary Meyers in the movie. It was Meyer’s coverstone translation of “doorway to heaven” that was replaced on the blackboard with “Stargate” by Dr. Daniel Jackson. French Stewart played Louis Ferretti who was one of the survivors of the first trip through the Stargate to Abydos and who was portrayed by Brent Stait in Stargate SG-1. Stewart played Dr. Andrew Covel in this week’s episode of Stargate Universe.

Thanks to Lt.Colonel John Sheppard and chevron9ine for playing along with us!
Stargate Universe: 2.13 "Alliances"

Which ALLIANCES will be forged—or broken—when Earth comes under attack?
Tonight at 10 PM ET on Syfy—and later this week in Canada and Australia—is Stargate Universe episode 2.13 “Alliances,” written by new producer/writer Linda McGibney and directed by Peter DeLuise.

“This one explores one of the more interesting relationships aboard Destiny,” executive producer Joseph Mallozzi wrote in his weblog. He also suggested that this episode is a great one for MSgt. Ronald Greer’s character development.

Two very special guest stars are featured tonight: Kathleen Quinlan (Apollo 13) portrays Senator Michaels, who replaced Chloe’s father Senator Alan Armstrong on the committee that manages the Icarus Project’s funding; and French Stewart, who played Louis Ferretti in Stargate (the movie), portrays Dr. Andrew Covel, a highly-regarded research scientist from Stargate Command. While these two are visiting Destiny using the communication stones linked to Camile Wray and Greer, Homeworld Command comes under attack, presumably by the Lucian Alliance. A terrible accident happens that puts all four individuals involved with the links in grave danger.

Is it possible that the members of the Alliance who are were permitted to become members of the Destiny crew have betrayed Earth? Tune in tonight to find out and make sure to rejoin us here for our episode poll on the front page.

Stargate Universe: 2.12 "Twin Destinies"

Has Eli found a way for the crew to get home?
Tonight at 10 PM ET on Syfy—and later this week in Canada and Australia—is Stargate Universe episode 2.12 “Twin Destinies,” written by Brad Wright and directed by Peter DeLuise.

Eli has been working on a way to get home, refining the calculations made by the original science team who, on paper, had developed a method to channel the energy from a sun while the Destiny recharged. Dr. Rush determined that the team didn’t have enough information concerning the ship’s condition, so he sabotaged their “experiment,” saving the ship and its crew in the process. Working with Lucian Alliance mathematician Ginn, Eli began to refine the formula to take more solar conditions under consideration. Even after Ginn’s death, Eli continued to make working on this formula a top priority because it was probably the only way that the crew could ever get home.

But, will Dr. Rush detect a problem in the formula and sabotage Eli’s efforts, too? Tune in tonight to find out and make sure to rejoin us here for our episode poll on the front page.
