Actor and Crew Updates

  • Not too long ago, JOE FLANIGAN mentioned in an interview, “I separated my shoulder in a mountain biking accident. I was coming down a single track trail at a furious speed – I just got brand new handle bars that were extra long – they snagged a branch and they just kind of threw me over and I landed on my back. I actually feel pretty damn lucky that it’s just an AC separation and not something more serious.” He went on with the injury to the Vancouver Stargate Con, and then he finally had the surgery on April 27. All is well, as the actor kept his fans updated on his Twitter (including providing a picture of him in his hospital bed), joking that on the day after, “My new breasts look great.”
  • MARK SAVELA did an interview with Sci Fi and TV Talk Blog about his prospect pilot Echoes. This production has several former Stargate cast and crew involved. They filmed a 13-minute prospect piece from the two-part pilot script, hoping to use it as a pitch for the creation of a new series. This crew is very well put together as they transfer their many years with Stargate into their own production. Echoes features JENNIFER SPENCE and MIKE DOPUD in leading roles.
  • BRIAN J. SMITH did an interview with Redeye Chicago/Show Patrol about his upcoming Syfy movie Red Faction: Origins. Smith declares that this movie is not going to be your typical “MOW” and that “It’s definitely quality and it has really, really smart minds behind it.” Stargate alum ROBERT PATRICK also stars. Red Faction: Origins premieres Saturday, June 4, at 9 PM ET.
  • CHRISTOPHER JUDGE and JEWEL STAITE are scheduled to be at the Tulsa Trek Expo in June, according to Tulsa World.
  • JASON MOMOA has been interviewed a lot recently, covering his roles of Khal Drogo in HBO’s Game of Thrones (currently airing on Sunday nights) and of Conan in the upcoming Conan the Barbarian movie (coming August 19). These interviews are indexed in our SOLUTIONS LJ here: Conan Movie and Game of Thrones.
  • MICHAEL SHANKS did a video interview while he was in France a few weekends ago for the SciFi15 convention. Solutions LJ has the embedded video in which Shanks discusses Stargate and his most recent projects.
  • MING-NA is back in Vancouver shooting her recurring role in Syfy’s Eureka. Her new role is Alice Wen, a senator who arrives in Eureka to handle a sensitive matter within Global Dynamics.

Of course that isn’t even counting those who are viewing the show through alternate platforms (ie. netflix, iTunes, and other download options).” — Joseph Mallozzi, October 19, 2010.
  2. “The ratings of the back half of season 2 will have absolutely no bearing on whether or not Brad and co. proceed with movies.” — Joseph Mallozzi, March 5, 2011.

Stargate Universe: 2.18 "Epilogue"

The Ancestors' fates are recorded in EPILOGUE.
Tonight at the new time of 9 PM ET on Syfy—and later this week in Canada and Australia—is Stargate Universe episode 2.18 “Epilogue,” written by Carl Binder and directed by Alex Chapple.

Picking up right where we left off from last week’s “Common Descent,” we’ll find out the fate of Novus, the world that was settled and developed by the time-traveling Destiny crew when they arrived there over 2000 years ago. The massive city was apparently abandoned as the cold and ash that resulted from a supervolcano’s eruption drove them out. But, where did they go?

Find out tonight as the video logs retell the survivors’ stories, and afterwards, make sure to rejoin us here for our episode poll on the front page.

News Flashes and Brief Follow-Ups

  • SG-1 in 'Window of Opportunity' in Season FourFranchise – With news that the Stargate franchise as we know it will end in a few weeks with the airing of SGU’s final episode “Gauntlet,” executive producer Joseph Mallozzi has begun to look back on his time with the productions, starting in Season Four of Stargate SG-1. He’s posting a series of entries dedicated to each season that he and writing partner Paul Mullie were in Vancouver, a place that they thought they would only be for a couple of years! Start reading his “Days of Stargate Past” in his April 22nd and April 23rd entries. Sadly, these reminiscent entries were sparked by the fact that they will start “de-rigging” Stage 5: “Stage 5, as you may or may not know, was home to Stargate: Universe’s Icarus base but, for many, many years before that, it held the standing sets for Stargate: SG-1: the SGC corridors, the infirmary, the control room, the briefing, Hammond’s office (later occupied by O’Neill, then Landry) and, of course, the gate room. Sad times indeed.”

Stargate Universe: 2.17 "Common Descent"

Stargate Universe Common Descent
Destiny's crew and a surprising human civilization find they are of COMMON DESCENT (MGM)
Tonight at the new time of 9 PM ET on Syfy—and later this week in Canada and Australia—is Stargate Universe episode 2.17 “Common Descent,” written by Robert C. Cooper and directed by Peter DeLuise.

Out this far in the universe, the probability of meeting a human civilization is extremely low, and the probability that they speak English and other languages of the Destiny crew seems even lower, but lo and behold: the Destiny crew encounters just that when they ‘gate to a nearby planet. What’s even more amazing is that these people not only knew that they were coming, but also their names!

Find out how when you tune in tonight to Robert C. Cooper’s last Stargate episode, and afterwards, make sure to rejoin us here for our episode poll on the front page.

TRIVIA: It’s been a tradition of Stargate to have children and other family members of the actors and crew appear in an episode. Tonight’s episode can be added to that list: “…I believe both of my kids [Elijah, 6; Hanna, 4] are just going to have a small background part, but it’s basically…It’s all mixed [race] kids. So my kids fit in perfectly to that.” — Alaina Huffman, Show Patrol interview, October 12, 2010.

Brad Wright: Stargate Movies Won’t Happen

Reports are coming out of the Creation Stargate Convention happening this weekend in Vancouver. The major news, just an hour old, is that Brad Wright said there will be no movies for any of the three Stargate series. Fan and con attendee @TimZen tweeted this news as Brad Wright was speaking to the fans this morning. Besides saying there won’t be any movies, Wright announced he will be moving on from Stargate regardless of what MGM decides to do with the franchise in the future. From @TimZen’s tweets:

  • #SGU movie is a no go #BradWright #Stargate
  • Confident franchise will continue in the future #BradWright #Stargate
  • Took too long to pull $$ together #SGU #BradWright #Stargate
  • “i did not cancel Atlantis” #BradWright #Stargate
  • For now the franchise is in MGMs hands #BradWright #Stargate
  • The other movies (as written now) aren’t gonna happen #BradWright #Stargate
  • “i appreciate the ‘we want you’… I’m gonna try something new for now” #BradWright #Stargate
  • SyFy did not approach us and as us to make it like #BSG #BradWright #Stargate
  • Finale of #SGU should leave us happy like “Unending” #BradWright #Stargate
  • “i am more proud of atlantis than you could ever know” #BradWright #Stargate
  • Thinks netflix and itunes kind of stuff is the future of TV #BradWright #Stargate
  • “thanks for supporting our show” #BradWright #Stargate
  • One more thing, Brad was very optimistic about Stargate going forward with MGM. Guy from GM likened it to their troubles; they reajusted..
  • … And now Chevy is selling again, Stargate is a tried and true franchise and MGM is sure to notice and leverage that. #Stargate

Brian J. Smith has just confirmed the news with tweets of his own:

  • Well now that the cat is out of the bag, it pains me to tell you guys that unfortunately we will not be shooting an #SGU movie.
  • Brad Wright fought long and hard, but financing has fallen through and we’ve hit a dead end. Looks like the end of the road for stargate.
  • Very saddened by the news, but we’re insanely proud of our show and grateful for the fans who have been so kind to us. What a ride!
  • That’s not to say that stargate could reemerge later on down the road in some form, but for the foreseeable future this is it. Pretty crazy.
  • @__SubZero__ gotta say, MGM was fighting for the movie too, but it just didn’t work out. Please don’t blame them.

We’re sorry to hear that for now, the franchise is over. Given the depth and breadth of fan support and interest, we hope MGM will resurrect it before too much time has passed.

In other news, apparently Chris Judge is not appearing today as planned. There is no word yet as to why.

Thanks very much to @TimZen for the very timely tweets and news.

Stargate Universe: 2.16 "The Hunt"

You know it's serious when Varro is asked to join in THE HUNT (MGM)
Tonight at 10 PM ET on Syfy—and later this week in Canada and Australia—is Stargate Universe episode 2.16 “The Hunt,” written by Joseph Mallozzi (and Paul Mullie) and directed by Andy Mikita.

“Hey, my second to last episode of Stargate: Universe, The Hunt, airs this week,” writer Mallozzi posted in his weblog. “It’s an interesting episode in that I tried very hard to make sure most every character got the opportunity to make a contribution. I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts and will make it a point to field your questions after the episode airs.” (Your questions can be directed to Mallozzi directly in the comments section of his weblog.)

Because Mallozzi wrote the episode, he shared with his weblog readers all of the ups and downs he experienced during its production (much of his journey is included in the Production Notes section in the episode’s guide in our Stargate Wiki). He even shared some on-location photos that he took while on a “field trip” to the famous Vancouver forests during the shoot! The weather posed a challenge, but the atmosphere created by shooting at night gave the location and story a “surreal alien feel,” something Mallozzi has enjoyed adding into his scripts as a fan of horror. There will be jump-in-you-seat moments, guaranteed, but there will also be other types of scenes to balance it out, such as “comic beats peppered throughout.”

The episode has an “old-fashioned” Stargate feel to it: the team ‘gates to a planet, gets in trouble, gets out of trouble, and then goes home. Well, at least most of them go home…

Tune in tonight to find out who makes it and who doesn’t, and afterwards, make sure to rejoin us here for our episode poll on the front page.
