Reminder: Paul McGillion Returns to "Sanctuary" Tonight (Oct. 15)

Sanctuary
Paul McGillion returns as Terrence Wexford in KALI III, the third season premiere of SANCTUARY. (Carole Segal/Syfy)
Amanda Tapping‘s Sanctuary returns with its third season tonight in Canada (Space, 9 PM ET) and the United States (Syfy, 10 PM ET) with “Kali III”, and Stargate star Paul McGillion is guest starring in his recurring role as Terrence Wexford!

“Kali III” picks up where the previous season left off as “two ships are wrecked and a tidal wave races toward the coast of Mumbai, India, following Wexford’s attempt to kill Big Bertha. When Wexford tries to kill the creature again, Magnus risks her life to intervene…” (TV Guide).

After tonight’s conclusion, where will the new season be taking its viewers? Tapping teased a little about the show’s direction in a recent interview, “Because we have a 20-episode pickup, we have the luxury of doing really big story arcs this year, which is very exciting. So we have two major threads that we’re pursuing throughout this season: one dealing with Helen’s past a bit more, and one that is something that’s much bigger than Big Bertha.”

McGillion told his fans that he’ll be back in next week’s episode (“Firewall”) as well. “I returned to Sanctuary, and my character of Terrence Wexford comes back and opens up the first two episodes of the third season. He’s especially prevalent in the second episode, and some very dramatic stuff happens onboard the ship. The lizard is back and in full force and he’s got a lot of attitude. Terrence isn’t a very nice man and he’s got his problems. I think the word is ‘power-hungry.’

“So it was great to be back and working with Amanda Tapping (Dr. Helen Magnus) and (executive producer) Martin Wood, who directed the episode. A lot of familiar faces from Stargate work on the show, too, so it was a real blast to be back and reprise my Wexford character. Again, we’ll see where it goes from there.”

NEW YORK – October 13, 2010 – Marking a major expansion of its original content, Syfy.com will premiere the award-winning, steampunk digital series Riese: Kingdom Falling beginning October 26, on syfy.com/riese every Tuesday and Thursday, it was announced today by Craig Engler, Senior Vice President/General Manager, Syfy Digital.

The critically acclaimed Riese: Kingdom Falling is distributed by Fireworks International, the television and digital distribution arm of ContentFilm plc. Each episode runs approximately seven to eight minutes.

Narrated by Amanda Tapping (Sanctuary), the 10-part series stars a cavalcade of talent from the world of popular speculative drama including Christine Chatelain (The Bone Collector); Sharon Taylor (Stargate Universe); Ben Cotton (Harper’s Island), Allison Mack (Smallville); Ryan Robbins (Caprica); Patrick Gilmore (Stargate Universe); Alessandro Juliani (Battlestar Galactica) and Emilie Ullerup (Sanctuary).

The series will also be available via Sony’s PS3, Microsoft’s Xbox and Amazon.

Said Engler: “We saw Riese and thought they had done just an amazing job, and then we were able to give them some resources and bring Amanda on board to really help them take the series to the next level. I think new and existing fans will love the relaunch of the series on Syfy.com and enjoy all the new additions.”

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction and fantasy that features anachronistic technology and design elements, often from Victorian-era Britain.

Riese:Kingdom Falling won the Streamy Award for Best Cinematography in a Web Series with a further three nominations for Best Sound Design, Best Foreign Series and Art Direction. The series was shot in Vancouver, BC, created by Ryan Copple and Kaleena Kiff, and produced by Galen Fletcher and Nicholas Humphries.

ABOUT RIESE: KINGDOM FALLING

Eleysia is a dying kingdom where resources are dwindling and compassion is fading. Distrust and anxiety have clouded people’s minds, causing a regression into primitive ways of thinking. People have grown restless, almost feral. Rituals and mythology have resurged, and the darker side of mankind has begun to reveal itself.

Riese (Christine Chatelain), a wanderer, travels across the decaying lands of Eleysia with her wolf, Fenrir. Marked as a heretic by religious group The Sect and the new Empress, Amara, Riese must evade their assassins and discover their true intentions for Eleysia.

Riese is the Crown Princess of Eleysia, forced to flee into the wilds after her family was slaughtered. She will soon serve as a catalyst for a disparate group of supposed heretics, the Resistance, launching them into civil war.

Stargate Universe: 2.03 "Awakening"

Greer in AWAKENING
Watch out, Greer! A creepy AWAKENING cannot possibly be a good thing!
Tonight (October 12) on Syfy at 9 PM ET: Stargate Universe episode 2.03 “Awakening”, written by Joseph Mallozzi (and Paul Mullie) and directed by Andy Mikita.

Actor Brian J. Smith called this episode “a real creepy story,” which seems to be a niche for Mallozzi who brought creepy to Stargate Atlantis in the episode “Whispers”.

Apparently, however, the writing of creepy stories doesn’t come easy, as Mallozzi’s many weblog entries during the episode’s production cycle will attest. His readers were taken along for the ride from concept to final mix as he agonized over the script and had to rewrite it several times, both before and after receiving notes from his fellow writers and Syfy. On top of that, there were budgetary concerns with the need both to build an impressive new set and to create an extensive number of VFX shots.

When Mallozzi walked onto the new set, he wrote, “My first reaction upon laying eyes on it was ‘OMG!’. That was my internal dialogue. I can’t remember what it was I actually said, but it was more or less the same sentiment expressed in much more colorful terms. Director Andy Mikita assured me he looked forward to the challenge of pulling it off.” What exactly is this set? If you’ve watched the promos or read the spoilers, you know (see our collection at the end of this article for the spoilery details).

Later in the production process, Mallozzi let his readers in on his departmental meetings. “When VFX Supervisor Mark Savela presented us with the visual effects budget for the episode, I thought Producer John Lenic was going to pass out on the spot. My buddy (and Exec. Producer) Carl wasn’t fazed when he heard the number. He merely shrugged and said: ‘Hey, we knew it was going to be big.’ Well, yes. Big. Not BIG! And so, to ensure we have enough money left to make the remaining fourteen episodes (or alleviate the need to make that special clip show three-parter), Director Andy Mikita and I spent an hour going through the script, tightening up here and there, trimming where we could, and shaving down that number. As a result, the VFX budget for Awakening now falls somewhere between big and BIG. BIg I guess. But what an episode it’ll be!”

And finally, after the filming and post-production were done, the producers got to sit down and watch the Day 1 Mix: “I just phoned Joel Goldsmith to congratulate him on the wonderful job he did scoring the episode. Congratulations should also go out to director Andy Mikita, the cast and crew, and – oh, boy! – Mark Savela and the VFX team! I repeat. Oh, boy!” After seeing the final VFX, he added, “I think it’s their best work yet.”

To spill on some of the specifics of these VFX shots would be to give away a really spoilery plot point, but needless to say, Mallozzi was impressed. He did leave this little teaser for those curious about the actual story: “Awakening boasts some of those incredible(r) VFX I was referring to (especially one complicated sequence many had reservations about that turned out nothing short of amazing) in addition to the discovery of a little something certain fans have been asking about since first season.” We’ll have to find out what that discovery is when we watch the creepy episode!
The crew encounters a ship, similar in ancient design to Destiny, which may provide the means to return to Earth.

The Destiny is set on a collision course with a ship of similar ancient design found floating in space. Panic turns to wonder as the ships dock with each other. As they review the data stream, they learn they have come upon one of the Stargate seeding ships that the Ancients sent out ahead of the Destiny.

Col. Young dispatches a team to investigate while setting Dr. Rush and Eli to analyze the flood of new data. Once aboard the seeder ship, Lt. Scott and his team discover that it might hold the energy to power the Stargate for a connection back to Earth.

Realizing this might be the key to getting home, Col. Telford convinces Young to let him join the team aboard the mysterious ship. But just as the energy transfer is underway they discover there’s more aboard the ship than power.
Michael Shanks Busy with Several TV Projects

Stargate star Michael Shanks has been so busy on several television projects that we thought it was time for an update dedicated to him alone!

With thanks to the actor’s official website MSOL for a heads-up, with some information coming from Shanks himself, we can give a brief rundown of each project:

The Good Guys

Michael Shanks BTS THE GOOD GUYS
Michael Shanks and Matt Nix behind the scenes in THE GOOD GUYS

“Role on the Good Guys is a possible returning character… kinda the boys “swat” nemesis. The episode is called ‘Supercops’ and I play the lead douche strike force captain Shaw, head of the ‘supercops’,” Shanks wrote.

We’ve done some digging and found that “Supercops” is episode 18. If the broadcast schedule continues uninterrupted, we’re projecting that the episode will air on FOX on Friday, November 19, at 9 PM ET. We’ll be able to confirm this when it gets closer to airing.

From the audition sides for Shaw, it appears that his Dallas Strike Force is an elite team that gets the job done with military precision. It’s fun to note that Shaw is described as “a swaggering, handsome cop with an attitude.”

Tower Prep

According to MSOL, Shanks will be in the third episode of this new live-action series for Cartoon Network. He’s playing Professor Literature. The show premieres on Tuesday, October 19, at 8 PM ET/PT, so if the schedule continues uninterrupted, Shanks’ episode, which was directed by Stargate alum Peter DeLuise, will premiere on Tuesday, November 2.

Endgame

 • Showcase – this is a new Canadian show that won’t be seen until Spring 2011!

Shanks wrote, “Just completed an episode of a Canadian series called EndGame. I play a character named Casey Roman who wakes up on a street with amnesia, and slowly pieces his life back together with the help of the lead character. He finds out he may have been a real asshole. The episode is called “The Caffeine Hit.” I did it because Anne Wheeler was directing and offered me the role. Good cast and script.” Anne Wheeler directed Shanks in two previous projects: Living Out Loud and Suddenly Naked.

MSOL described the new show, “Starring Shawn Doyle (Big Love, Medium) and Torrance Coombs (The Tudors, JPod), Endgame revolves around Russian World Champion chess master Arkady Balagan (Doyle), who uses his extraordinary skills of perception and strategic thinking to solve crimes that have stumped others. Traumatized by the murder of his fiancée, Balagan has made himself a virtual prisoner in his luxury Vancouver hotel, terrified to step outside the door. To pay the bills, he begins to solve crimes and help people with problems they cannot bring to the police.”

Additional cast members include Patrick Gallagher (Glee, True Blood), Kate Isabelle (The Good Wife, Sanctuary), Carmen Aguerre (Tin Man, Da Vinci’s Inquest) and Melanie Papilia (The Assistants, Intelligence).

Smallville

Michael Shanks as Carter Hall in SMALLVILLE
Michael Shanks as Carter Hall in SMALLVILLE

“Do the 11th episode of Smallville when I get back from Oz. The ep is called ‘Icarus,'” Shanks told MSOL.

This episode is also one in which Michael Hogan of Battlestar Galactica will appear as Slade Wilson, who will be introduced in the ninth episode “Patriot.” IGN tells us, “We’ll only know him by the name Slade when we meet him, but DC fans of course are aware that this is the man destined to become Deathstroke, an incredibly skilled and dangerous mercenary.”

When Carter Hall last appeared in “Shield,” he implied that he saw his death coming soon (he has immortality through reincarnation). Let’s hope it’s not in this episode, but the presence of Deathstroke does seem rather ominous.

Shanks said he’ll film “Icarus” (that name should sound familiar to Stargate Universe fans) after his return from “Oz.” He’ll be a guest at the Armageddon Melbourne con from October 15-17. He’s also scheduled to be in New Zealand the following weekend (October 23-25) at the Armageddon Expo in Auckland, so filming of the episode should happen near the end of this month.

Reminder: Robert Picardo in Syfy's "Monsterwolf" Tonight

Mosterwolf PosterTonight (October 9) is the premiere of Syfy’s Original Movie Monsterwolf, starring Stargate‘s Robert Picardo as Mr. Stark. The tagline: “Greedy oilmen encounter the wrath of a Native American spirit wolf.”

A more detailed description of the movie was included in a press release from Syfy about their fall schedule:

On the outskirts of a small Louisiana town, a drilling crew sets blast charges to tap an oil deposit – releasing the Kachinawaya, a Native American animal spirit meant to protect Indian lands from invaders. Stars Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) and Jason London (Wildfire). A production of Active Entertainment.

“I am not the title character, but rather a very arrogant, aggressive oil tycoon who gets his comeuppance… brutally,” Picardo told his fans in a recent interview with StarTrek.com.

The movie is part of Syfy’s “31 Days of Halloween” schedule, premiering at 9 PM ET and repeating at 1 AM ET.
