Paul Emerson
Summary
Col. Paul Emerson was the first commander of the Daedalus-class starship Odyssey (9.16 "Off The Grid"). He was executed by members of the Lucian Alliance in order to coerce Lt. Col. Samantha Carter's cooperation after the Alliance damaged and boarded the Odyssey (10.09 "Company of Thieves").
Character Biography
Emerson was proud of his brand new ship and crew. Following in the wake of the destruction of Earth's first line of defense against alien space attacks, the Prometheus, the Odyssey was not yet 100% tested when Emerson was asked by Gen. Hank Landry to go to the planet P6G-452 to rescue SG-1 after contact was lost with the team via the Stargate. The Odyssey had functional hyperspace engines and rail guns, but the shields had not been tested. Even so, Emerson took his ship on its first mission and was at the planet within 22 hours. He located the missing team with locator beacon implants in the nick of time — they were about to be executed by the Lucian Alliance!
The reason for SG-1's loss of contact was that Ba'al had stolen the planet's Stargate and DHD in his bid to create his own private Stargate network, outside the interference of the Priors of the Ori and anyone else. Landry tagged one of Ba'al's Goa'uld scientists, Nerus, with a beacon and Emerson located Ba'al's ship that contained at least a dozen stolen Stargates. Using the Asgard beaming technology and locator beacons that SG-1 manually placed on each piece of technology, SG-1 and Emerson retrieved all but one of the Stargates from Ba'al's cargo hold before his ship was destroyed by an attack from the Lucian Alliance. The Stargate that couldn't be beamed was the one that SG-1 used to escape before Ba'al's ship exploded.
After the destruction of Ba'al's ship, the Lucian Alliance locked their weapons on the Odyssey because Emerson had fired on them with his rail guns to distract them from firing upon Ba'al's ship while SG-1 was onboard. Fearing that his ship was not ready to face three ha'tak, Emerson withdrew into hyperspace. At that point, he thought that SG-1 had died on Ba'al's ill-fated ship and most likely felt that his first mission was a failure because of the loss of SG-1, but SG-1 'gated safely home to the SGC and asked that Landry contact him to reassure him that they were safe and that the mission was indeed a success. (9.16 "Off The Grid")
Emerson saved SG-1 and four representatives of the International Oversight Advisory (IOA) from the Prior Bugs at the Gamma Site. These bugs went from having vegetation as their primary food source to eating people. Unfortunately, the rest of the personnel who were at the Gamma Site at the time the bugs got loose died. (9.17 "The Scourge")
When the Ori completed a "Supergate" as a means to invade the Milky Way, Emerson was one of two Earth spaceship commanders present at the site. He gave Carter the go-ahead to replace a control crystal on the Supergate with one that the Asgard Kvasir had reprogrammed to dial the Ori's home galaxy to prevent the Ori from establishing a wormhole first. Unfortunately, Carter's spacewalk was interrupted when the Ori established a wormhole and sent four of their massive warships through. Emerson's Odyssey sustained a tremendous amount of damage, leaving the ship "dead in the water" quickly and Carter floating helplessly in space. (9.20 "Camelot Part 2")
The Odyssey was one of the surviving ships of the allied fleet, and Emerson coordinated the rescue of several Free Jaffa from their failing ships. His ship's life support capabilities were limited, however, and he asked that the Lucian Alliance provide assistance, but Netan was angry that his ship was damaged and demanded that Emerson surrender his ship instead. Netan's ship was severely crippled and he was unable to see his threats through. Emerson concentrated most of his efforts at getting his ship operational and rescuing the members of SG-1 who had been separated throughout the course of the battle. Fortunately, Emerson was able to get his ship's beaming technology and hyperdrive operational once more and he was instrumental in rescuing Mitchell from his F-302, Carter from outerspace, Teal'c from the Lucian Alliance, and Daniel and Vala from the Ori warship that had landed on Chulak. (10.01 "Flesh and Blood Part 3")
After repair, the Odyssey was called into action to take Dr. Daniel Jackson, Lt. Col. Samantha Carter, Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell, and Vala Mal Doran to Atlantis in order to execute two very important missions: research the archives on Atlantis to locate Merlin's anti-Ascended weapon and establish a wormhole to the Supergate in the Milky Way from a Stargate in the Pegasus Galaxy. Emerson dropped off Daniel and Vala and picked up Dr. Rodney McKay to assist in the Stargate-to-Supergate connection. The Odyssey was placed under significant stress because of the close proximity to a black hole used by the team to power the Stargate that they launched to float nearby. Teal'c was in an al'kesh near the other Stargate in the Milky Way, situated close to the Supergate. They planned to make the wormhole jump from their two smaller Stargates to the Supergate, thus making the Supergate unavailable for the Ori to send more warships. When the Odyssey came under attack by a Wraith hive ship, and they were on their last nuclear warheads, the crew made a daring attempt to simultaneously destroy the Wraith hive ship and force the wormhole to jump to the Supergate by beaming their last two bombs onto the Wraith ship when its defense systems were weakened by the effects of the black hole. Amazingly, Teal'c was able to lure a nearby Ori warship into the Supergate's unstable vortex as the wormhole jumped and not only did they cut off the Ori's access to the Supergate, but they also destroyed one of the four Ori warships sent in the Ori's first wave invasion. (10.03 "The Pegasus Project")
Part of the Odyssey's function in the galaxy was to follow up on any leads concerning the Ori's building of additional Supergates. The Free Jaffa received intelligence that a Supergate could possibly be under construction, and the Odyssey, with Carter onboard, was sent to investigate. To their surprise, they found a neutron star, rather than a black hole and Supergate, at the location, and soon the ship's shields were affected by the star's gravitational forces. The intelligence was false — the Lucian Alliance had set a trap with the Odyssey as its prey. The Alliance attacked with three ha'tak while the ship's shields were weakened. Emerson ordered the ship to return fire and to take evasive maneuvers. Unfortunately, this led the ship into another trap — a mine field. Emerson succeeded at getting a distress call to Stargate Command before his ship was boarded by Alliance members, headed by Anateo. (10.09 "Company of Thieves")
Anateo decided to keep the Odyssey rather than see it destroyed, so he spared the ship's crew, confining them to a cargo hold. He called for Carter, but Emerson stepped up as the ship's commander. He was struck across the face for doing so, and Carter stepped forward. Both Emerson and Carter were escorted to the bridge so that Anateo could demand that their emergency transponder be disabled. Emerson ordered Carter not to comply because it was the only way that he felt his crew could be saved and was shot in the chest at point blank range by Anateo's right-hand man, Solek. Solek coldly emptied three more rounds into Emerson's fallen body. (10.09 "Company of Thieves")
Eventually, Carter was joined by Daniel and Vala who had been captured while tracing the beacon's signal to a planet known to have Alliance ties (a trap to capture all of SG-1), and with the help of the rest of the crew, they regained control of the ship. Vala beamed Anateo into space and Solek into parts unknown, but the remaining fourteen of the Alliance's men were imprisoned in a cargo hold. With Anateo's and Solek's deaths, Emerson's was avenged, and his ship and crew were saved. (10.09 "Company of Thieves")
