Browder Passes on "Hellcats" Series

There was some confusion surrounding the notable absence of Ben Browder‘s name in the official press releases concerning The CW’s picking up the Tom Welling pilot Hellcats to series. Browder fans asked around and now fansite Ben Browder Portal has published this announcement, which comes directly from Browder’s management office:

According to Ben’s management, he has made the difficult decision to pass on the opportunity to work on the series Hell Cats. Ben has chosen to focus his attention on a couple of other film projects in the works.

We’ll keep our eyes open for the announcements for these film projects, as well as look forward to seeing him as Nick Naught in the web-based series Naught for Hire that’s due to debut in December this year!

Update on Ben Browder: The CW Picks Up "Hellcats"

Ben BrowderThis news just in from The Futon Critic: Stargate star Ben Browder‘s Hellcats pilot has been picked up to series by The CW for the fall!

Hellcats is an ensemble drama set in the world of competitive college cheerleading. Aly Michalka, Ashley Tisdale, Ben Browder, Elena Esovolova, Gail O’Grady, Heather Hemmens, Matt Barr, Robbie Jones and Sharon Leal all star in the project, which comes from CBS Television Studios, Tom Welling Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Allan Arkush directed the pilot presentation, which was penned by Kevin Murphy.

Browder’s character description (from an earlier announcement):

He’ll reportedly play Red Irvine, Lancer University’s football coach, “a handsome rogue who never lost the boyishness of youth.” He and the Hellcats coach Vanessa Hodge (Sharon Leal) share a history – they had an affair while he, then married at the time, was an assistant coach and she was cheer captain – and now he wants payback (she dumped him after he left his wife without telling her) in the form of getting her fired after one of the Hellcats (Heather Hemmens) gets hurt.

The pilot was shot in Vancouver, so the show will most likely also film there. According to the show’s overview page at the Critic’s website, there will be 13 episodes in the first season.

Browder is also producing and starring in the web-based series Naught for Hire, which will consist of thirteen six-minute episodes and is expected to premiere in December.

Congratulations, Mr. Browder!

Ben Browder to Star in Web Series

Ben Browder is slated to star in a new web-based series called Naught For Hire, according to this article at Tubefilter. They describe the show as “a sci-fi/noir romp about a private detective and his relationship with the inanimate objects in his life.” Ben stars in the title role, and other familiar sci fi genre actors will feature as well. From the article:

The series will consist of six minute episodes with a 13 episode season planned. Episodes echo the spirit of pulp-style serialized detective stories, with each episode ending on a cliffhanger. Not forgetting the sci-fi side of the series, the show is set in a world 20 years in the future where humans co-exist with A.I. embedded objects, leaving hard-boiled, down-on-his-luck Private Detective Nick Naught to try to do his job while competing with a car that is in love with him, an elevator that won’t cooperate, and an answering machine that wants to do nothing but pull pranks on him. Imagine what his gun must be like…

The show will start production this summer, with a planned premiere in December. For more information about the project, visit Tubefilter. Also visit the project’s fun website: naughtforhire.com

Browder & Bridges: Status of Their TV Pilots

We’re keeping tabs on the status of the television pilots in which two of our Stargate stars have been cast. This latest report comes from Deadline Hollywood‘s Nellie Andreeva, who regularly updates her “Primetime Pilot Panic” series of articles.

Andreeva opens up her report, “With pilots starting to be delivered, more information is trickling in for the 2010-2011 season. Remember, it’s still very early and many pilots have not been screened yet. This is Round 2, updating my previous, PRIMETIME PILOT PANIC: Early Hot List, with polling from agents, executives, showrunners, producers, directors, writers, etc:”

Beau Bridges: Bridges has been cast as Rocky, the father of the title character, Jim Rockford, in the remake of the James Garner classic The Rockford Files. The pilot is for NBC. Its status: “NBC has been very high on this for obvious reasons (well-known franchise … David Shore as creator). The network only received the pilot this weekend, early feedback from people who have seen the cut is positive.”

Ben Browder: Browder has been cast in the Hellcats pilot as the college football coach whose character breakdown describes someone who is far removed from the honorable Col. Cameron Mitchell of SG-1. The CW, known to target a young audience, is considering this pilot, which is executive produced by actor Tom Welling of Smallville, a show that was just renewed for its tenth season on the same network. Hellcats centers around the team members of the competitive world of college cheerleading. Even during casting, this pilot looked to be “on track” and Andreeva reports that it looks “very strong, very on-brand.”

The Rockford Files and Hellcats will premiere in the fall if picked up. Here’s crossing our fingers for “good luck” to both!
