City of Chulak

Summary

Chulak is a world populated by millions of Jaffa. Once a headquarters for the Goa'uld Apophis, Chulak is the home of Bra'tac and Teal'c. Chulak currently is the location of a large colony of Free Jaffa.

Realm of Apophis

Chulak was a headquarters, if not the main headquarters for the system lord, Apophis. The planet was populated by Jaffa. Most of the male Jaffa were in service to the Goa'uld by acting as warriors in Apophis's army. It was also the site of the battle of Tazek'sur, where some Jaffa, including Gerak's father, attempted to rise against the false gods and were beaten (9.11 "The Fourth Horseman Part 2").

Apophis's harem

Chulak was a garrison for Apophis at the time he first encountered the Tau'ri (1.01 "Children of the Gods, Part 1"). It was from here that he and a small force of Jaffa conducted their raid on the Cheyenne Mountain facility and abducted a female sergeant. Later, a similar raiding party also attacked Ra's former territory of Abydos, abducting both Daniel Jackson's wife Sha're and her brother Skaara. Both the Abydonians and the sergeant were imprisoned on Chulak, the two women becoming part of a harem of beautiful young women. Eventually each was chosen by Apophis's first prime Teal'c as a potential host for Apophis's mate, Amaunet. (1.02, "Children of the Gods, Part 2"). Although Amaunet rejected the sergeant, she took Sha're as her host.

Luckily, one of the injured soldiers from Earth, Major Ferretti, noted the Stargate address when Apophis's raiding party left Abydos, so a rescue party was formed under the newly formed SGC. SG-1, led by Colonel Jack O'Neill, and SG-2, led by Major Charles Kawalsky, traveled to this new location. SG-2 guarded the Stargate while SG-1 reconnoitered, encountering priests of Chulak, who thought SG-1 were gods and welcomed them to a feast in the palace. The feast was interrupted by the arrival of Apophis and Amaunet, much to Daniel's shock.

The team was imprisoned in the garrison on the planet, where they were reunited with Skaara. Soon afterwards, several Goa'uld entered the cell and chose various humans as hosts, including Skaara. Apophis ordered everyone else killed. O'Neill convinced Apophis's First Prime, Teal'c, to help him free the prisoners, and Teal'c made the fateful decision to betray his god and join the Tau'ri, leaving his home behind.

During their escape, they encountered other Jaffa and a firefight ensued as they led the refugees to the Stargate. They succeeded in leaving the planet, but not without a casualty. An almost mature symbiote left a Jaffa's dying body and entered Kawalsky, turning him into a Goa'uld. The Goa'uld attempted to escape the SGC and return to Chulak, but was thwarted by Teal'c and killed when the active gate to Chulak shut down with Kawalsky's head partially in the wormhole (1.03 "The Enemy Within"). On another occasion, Hathor fled the SGC and dialed the gate to Chulak in her escape (1.14 "Hathor"). It is unclear how long she stayed at the planet, or even if it was just a temporary stopping point before dialing a new location.

After Apophis's defeat in his attempted invasion of Earth, he lost the support of many of his guards (2.08 "Family). Chulak was in chaos, and few guards remained loyal to him. It was at this time that Apophis kidnapped and brainwashed Teal'c's son, Rya'c. SG-1 believed a rescue attempt was possible due to the political upheaval on Chulak as reported by Bra'tac (see "Teal'c and Chulak" below for more information on this mission).

The Rebel Jaffa Cause on Chulak

When Daniel Jackson, Samantha Carter and Jack O'Neill were declared MIA after a mission, and there were no clues as to where they were or if they were alive, Teal'c quit the SGC and returned to Chulak to enlist more Jaffa to save his team (3.01 "Into the Fire"). When Teal'c arrived at Bra'tac's home, he found his mentor seriously injured. Teal'c learned that when Bra'tac heard of Apophis's death, he announced the false god's death with joy, believing others would join the Rebel Jaffa cause. Instead, many feared Klorel would return. The last of Apophis's personal guard attacked Bra'tac, leaving him for dead. Teal'c helped his mentor, and they planned to enlist more to the cause to fight false gods.

That evening, Teal'c entered the city, where a female Jaffa confronted him, distracting him with her bitter diatribe while other Jaffa tried to overpower him. Teal'c swiftly disposed of his attackers and ordered the woman to tell her kinsman to hear him speak at the house of Bra'tac at dawn. Frightened, the woman did as bid.

The next day, several Jaffa gathered. They were shocked to see Bra'tac and Teal'c and listened to their impassioned speeches about rising against the Goa'uld. Too many were frightened and left the home, but a few remained, including General Hammond, who arrived on Chulak with intelligence about SG-1's whereabouts and hoping to get Teal'c's help. Teal'c and Hammond left in an antiquated Goa'uld ship, while Bra'tac and the few Jaffa they had enlisted to their cause arrived on foot to help rescue the SG-1 and the captured rescue SG teams.

Rebel camp outside city

Bra'tac continued to foster an underground rebel Jaffa movement on Chulak and elsewhere. Apophis ended up attacking his former stronghold because of the large numbers of rebel Jaffa on the planet (3.20 "Maternal Instinct"). One of Bra'tac's prodigies, Moac, became injured and he and Bra'tac left Chulak to report this latest news to the SGC. Unfortunately, Moac died from his injuries.

Teal'c continued to visit Chulak, fomenting his relationships with the growing Rebel Jaffa. After Apophis left Netu with Sokar's army, he returned to Chulak and slaughtered many of the Jaffa on the planet (4.13 "Serpents Venom"). Teal'c returned there, fueling the fire of those who were angry at Apophis's actions. It was during one such visit where he first met Rak'nor, and attempted to create an alliance between the various Rebel Jaffa leaders. However, Rak'nor was still loyal to the Goa'uld, and the meeting was merely a trap. Teal'c was kidnapped from the planet and brought to Heru'ur. Teal'c eventually convinced Rak'nor the Goa'uld were not gods, and Rak'nor helped him escape.

The Rebel Jaffa movement continued to grow strong on Chulak. Teal'c and Bra'tac went to Chulak in the hopes of finding a vessel to help aid them from Anubis's impending attack on Earth (7.21 "Lost City Part 1"). Ronan offered the use of his tel'tak, so long as he was allowed to pilot them in the vessel (7.22 "Lost City Part 2"). Ronan was a spy for Anubis, and was waiting on Chulak for just such an opportunity. After they left Chulak, his true loyalties were revealed, but he did not succeed in his mission.

Chulak of the Free Jaffa

After the Goa'uld and Replicators were defeated, Chulak became a planet filled with now free Jaffa. When the head of the Free Jaffa Council, Gerak, was trying to convince all Jaffa to follow the Ori religion, "Origin", several opponents, including Teal'c and Bra'tac met at Chulak to plan on ways to stop the spread of Origin. (9.10 "The Fourth Horseman, Part 1") Gerak and his Prior mentor were aware of the meeting and Gerak arrived by ha'tak to destroy the planet. He met with the opposition leaders on the planet's surface, warning them of his intent, but they did not submit. At the last minute, Gerak reconsidered the killing of innocent inhabitants on the planet below and defied the Prior's orders.

The Prior was enraged at Gerak's refusal and brought Gerak's consciousness to the City of Celestis, where he met the Doci and the Ori and became a Prior himself. Now convinced of the power of the Ori, Gerak was steadfast in his belief and insisted the Jaffa turn to Origin (9.11 "The Fourth Horseman, Part 2"). To counter this ultimatum, Teal'c proposed the opposition gather and make a stand on Chulak. Faced with the prospect of inciting a civil war that would kill millions, the council would be left with an impossible choice: to decide between the Ori and their fellow Jaffa. Teal'c's belief was that by forcing the Council's hand, they would see reason.

Showdown in orbit of Chulak

The opposition fleet gathered in orbit around Chulak, and Gerak's much larger force arrived to meet them. Before they engaged in battle, Teal'c proposed a parley between himself and Gerak on the surface of the planet and the newly anointed Prior agreed. The two walked together along a forested path. Gerak only belated realized that Teal'c had led him directly to the memorial of the Battle of Tazek'sur, where Gerak's own father had given his life in the battle against false gods. Teal'c made an impassioned speech to Gerak questioning the motives of the Ori and the nature of a god and true enlightenment. Gerak was convinced by Teal'c's arguments and left the planet with Teal'c to heal the Earth population of the Prior plague.

Even after Gerak's sacrifice, some of his followers continued to insist Origin should be followed. The Council at Dakara fought heavily over the matter, and mysteriously, several Jaffa loyal to Teal'c's cause started changing their votes (9.14 "Stonghold"). Teal'c travelled to Chulak to discuss the matter with their allies there and meet with U'kin. Before he could return to Dakara, he was led into a trap by the brainwashed U'kin and was kidnapped by Ba'al who was the cause of the strange changing of votes. Bra'tac and Daniel Jackson, retracing Teal'c's steps, discovered the subterfuge.

Cham'ka Groves: an area of Chulak where Teal'c brought Rya'c to play when he was a small boy (2.08 "Family"). It is also the code Rya'c chose to tell his father where to find him in the morning when he was being held by Apophis. Although correctly concerned with this subterfuge, SG-1 set up an ambush and rescued Rya'c in the Cham'ka Groves. This location was also where Rebel Jaffa leaders planned to meet with Teal'c (4.13 "Serpent's Venom"). Rak'nor, then still loyal to the Goa'uld, planned to go there to crush the rebellion.
Chappa'ai: The Chulak Stargate is located in a clearing scattered with several large granite style boulders.
City of Chulak: It is unclear if the city, the whole planet, or both were named Chulak. It sthe name the priests gave to Daniel when he asked to be taken to the nearest village (1.02 "Children of the Gods Part 2"). The priests believed SG-1 was there for the ceremony to choose who would become the children of the gods. Apophis's palace is within the city. (1.02 "Children of the Gods Part 2") The Rebel Jaffa often met in camps just outside of the city (4.13 "Serpent's Venom", 7.02 "Lost City Part 2").
Cord'ai Plains: an area of Chulak. Drey'auc came from the Cor'dai Plains (2.08 "Family). It is also from where Hak'nor, a Rebel Jaffa leader, originated (4.13 "Serpent's Venom")
Garrison: Where Apophis's prison was. The structure was meant more for intimidation and holding human slaves than for any real defense. Two blasts from a staff weapon were able to break through the prison walls of the facility.
Gomai Foothills: an area of Chulak from where Ma'kar originated. He, with Rak'nor, are the ones who betrayed Teal'c on a visit there (4.13 "Serpent's Venom")
High Cliffs: an area of Chulak. Fro'tak, Teal'c's closest confidante and later husband of Drey'auc came from there (2.08 "Family"). It is also where Kolna, a Rebel Jaffa leader, originated (4.13 "Serpent's Venom")
Palace: The palace of Apophis is where SG-1 were brought by priests, believing the team to be Goa'uld who were there for the ceremony to choose new hosts (1.02 "Children of the Gods Part 2"). SG-1 was captured by Apophis and his Jaffa while feasting there. Fro'tak worked in the Hall of Records at the palace (2.08 "Family"). It was also where Apophis held Rya'c after he kidnapped the boy. When feeling betrayed, Fro'tak ran to the palace to reveal the whereabouts of SG-1 to Apophis's Serpent Guards.
Tazek'sur: location of a great battle on Chulak, where a rebellion against the Goa'uld was crushed, though it sowed further seeds of doubt among many Jaffa, including Gerak, as to whether the Goa'uld were gods (9.11 "Fourth Horseman Part 2")
Temple: where the seplica was kept (1.12 "Bloodlines") A seplica is a tank holding infant Goa'ulds before they were of age to be implanted into Jaffa.

Alternate Chulaks

Alternate Reality: 1.20 "There But For The Grace Of God"

One of the differences in an alternate reality Daniel Jackson encountered was that no team from Earth ever visited Chulak, thus never encountering Teal'c (1.20 "There But For the Grace of God). Instead, Apophis attacked Earth in ha'tak vessels, with Teal'c leading the invasion force of the SGA (the alternate reality's version of the SGC). When Daniel provided the gate address to Chulak, alternate General O'Neill ordered a nuclear weapon be sent through. Though Daniel protested, he could not convince them not to retaliate against beings who had destroyed 1.5 billion of the alternate Earth's population. Alternate Teal'c was informed of his home's destruction, including the death of his wife and son, which angered him to the point of killing the man who gave the order, the alternate O'Neill.

Alternate Timeline: 8.20 "Moebius Part 2"

When a time-traveling SG-1 changed the timeline of Ancient Egypt, the Stargate program only came into being ten years after it was supposed to, only uncovering the Antarctic Stargate at that time and obviously never traveling to other planets (8.19 "Moebius Part 1"). Armed with the original SG-1's video diary, the first expedition team, made up of different versions of Dr. Daniel Jackson, Dr. Samantha Carter, retired Col. Jack O'Neill, a living Major Charlie Kawalsky, Major Ferretti and Airman Bosworth went to Chulak in the time machine modified Ancient ship specifically for the purpose of finding Teal'c and convincing him to join them and fix the timeline (8.20 "Moebius Part 2").

They were captured by Apophis's forces and imprisoned in the same place the original timeline's SG-1 had been stuck eight years before. Apophis tortured the alternate timeline's Daniel Jackson, but he would not reveal the Tau'ri secrets. After an hour of witnessing this, Teal'c returned to the prison with the group's camcorder. Seeing the video of the other timeline's Teal'c convinced him to help the Tau'ri, but not before Apophis implanted a Goa'uld in Daniel Jackson to get him to reveal their plan. Taking heavy fire and suffering casualties, including the deaths of Kawalsky, the Goa'ulded Jackson, Ferretti and Bosworth, the alternate O'Neill, Carter, and Teal'c activated the time machine and went back five thousand years to an earlier Chulak. They did not remain there long, but activated the Stargate to return to Earth and fix the altered timeline.

Alternate Reality: 9.13 "Ripple Effect"

According to Samantha Carter of the alternate SG-1 that caused teams from several alternate realities to converge in this universe, the Ori established a second beachhead and destroyed Chulak, Dakara, and most of the Jaffa strongholds (9.13 "Ripple Effect"). Since she and her team were lying about several things to hide their culpability in creating the rupture in space-time, it is uncertain whether her information was accurate. However, the team was desperate to even take such action, so it is likely her intelligence on the Ori's efforts were true.

Teal'c and Chulak

Teal'c explained to Daniel that after his father's death at the hands of Cronus, his mother and he were banished and fled to Chulak (3.03 "Into the Fire"). It was there that Teal'c vowed to do everything possible to become First Prime of Apophis, the Goa'uld who was Cronus's sworn enemy.

Teal'c's training on Chulak

At some point during his life on Chulak, Teal'c met Shaun'auc (4.04 "Crossroads"). The two were attracted to each other and fell in love. However, it was not meant to be. Teal'c continued to rise in the warrior ranks of Apophis's army, and Shaun'auc was destined to be a Jaffa priestess. They went their separate ways, but Shaun'auc continued to follow Teal'c's career and was proud when he finally broke from Apophis.

It was on Chulak that Teal'c first began his training as a warrior in Apophis's army. He and Fro'tak, his closest confidante, trained under Bra'tac during the earliest bashaak training (2.08 "Family"). Master Bra'tac nurtured Teal'c in his training on Chulak, and helped him rise to the position of First Prime, teaching him about the Goa'uld and nurturing Teal'c's distrust of their nature (5.02 "Threshold"). Once Teal'c had become powerful enough, Bra'tac revealed the truth that the Goa'uld were not gods. Teal'c was troubled by this concept and shared his concerns with his wife. Drey'auc was shocked and worried what this would mean for Teal'c, and her unborn child so soon after Apophis built them their house on Chulak.

Home of the Shol'va

Only months after arriving at the SGC did Teal'c reveal that he left a family behind when he left Chulak. (1.12 "Bloodlines"). SG-1 returned to Chulak, to find Teal'c's home destroyed and graffiti marking it as "shol'va", meaning "traitor" in Goa'uld. Teal'c's mentor, Master Bra'tac still guarded the home and helped Teal'c find his wife and young son Rya'c.

Drey'auc and Rya'c were banished to be kreshta, outcasts, far from the village. Drey'auc had to beg for a priest to perform the primta ceremony on Rya'c when he came of age. She was resentful of how Teal'c's decision to betray Apophis affected their life, but eventually came to accept Teal'c's decision and agreed with it, especially when she saw Teal'c was willing to die himself by giving his primta to save Rya'c.

Immature symbiotes were stored in a temple, called a seplica, on Chulak. Sam Carter and Daniel Jackson retrieved one for study, but Daniel killed the others. The retrieved symbiote ended up saving Teal'c, who had given his own symbiote to Rya'c. Drey'auc and Rya'c remained on Chulak under the protection of Bra'tac.

Although Drey'auc accepted Teal'c's decision, she was a survivor and did what she could to best protect her son (2.08 "Family"). After she believed Teal'c dead, she had their marriage "removed" and married Teal'c's friend, Fro'tak, to protect and provide for Rya'c. Teal'c discovered this when he returned to Chulak after their son was kidnapped by Apophis. Angry at first at her and Fro'tak's betrayal, Teal'c and Drey'auc eventually spoke and renewed their love. They were unaware Fro'tak witnessed this. Hurt by Drey'auc's betrayal, Fro'tak went to the palace on Chulak to reveal SG-1's presence to Apophis. O'Neill followed and killed Fro'tak before he could raise the alarm. SG-1, with Bra'tac and Drey'auc rescued Rya'c and escaped Chulak, returning to Earth. Drey'auc and Rya'c took refuge in the Land of Light and did not return to Chulak for some time.

Sometime after Apophis's death, Drey'auc and Rya'c eventually did return home, however, and stayed with other Rebel Jaffa who had taken refuge on Chulak. It was here Drey'auc's symbiote matured (6.01 "Redemption Part 1"). She refused to allow the Rebel Jaffa to procure another. Bra'tac contacted Teal'c on Earth to inform him of his wife's condition. Teal'c returned home to Chulak only to meet his resentful son and bear witness to his wife's corpse. He conducted the funeral rite of shel mak assah on Drey'auc's body near the Chulak Stargate. Rya'c eventually came to terms with his father and joined he and Bra'tac on a mission (6.01 "Redemption Part 2"). Afterwards, Rya'c continued to travel with Bra'tac for the Rebel Jaffa movement, and it is uncertain whether or not Teal'c's son still calls Chulak his home.
