SG-1 Spoilers: Producers and Cast on "The Ark of Truth"

Thanks go to our on-site forum member SueS for gleaning out some spoilers for Robert C. Cooper’s Stargate: The Ark of Truth from the lastest edition of the Official Stargate SG-1/Atlantis Magazine (issue #18):

Stargate: The Ark of Truth

Robert Cooper: “The movie I’m doing, The Ark of Truth, is the two-parter that I was going to do as the cliff-hanger ending of season 10 and opening episode of season 11. We were never going to get the resolution that we get in the movie, the movie is a much more climactic condensation of the arc that we were going to tell in season 11. That makes it more exciting. So many big things happen in the movie, it’s got a scope to it that normal episodes of the series just don’t have. Not just in terms of the money we’re spending on it, or the time we’ve taken to make it, it’s more the story and how big that is.”

Brad Wright: “Robert’s story, The Ark of Truth, is just great fun too. They’re both very ambitious and we’re throwing out every trick we know. What we’re really doing is telling a longer, more complex story than we do with our television episodes. It’s not a long episode – it’s different. We’re very excited.”

Ben Browder: “The thing is we’re back to shooting (The Ark of Truth) on 35mm film, and I love the look of 35mm. Robert (Cooper) is moving the camera in a way that we didn’t move it on the series, and that’s exciting. The first movie is more related to the last few episodes of the series …”

Amanda Tapping:The Ark of Truth is really a wrapping up of the Ori storyline. Carter spends a lot of time on the Odyssey, fixing a major problem there because we’re dealing with Replicators and a whole myriad of other nasties. It is a big wrap up of the Ori storyline so there’s a lot of Daniel and Vala and Adria.”

Beau Bridges: “In these two movies it’s really kind of time for the Ori to get theirs! One of my favorite lines that I have in the movie is when I look this one Prior in the face and say, “You go ahead and burst into flames!” They know they’re going down, and they do. It’s so much fun to be back with the old crew … these guys and girls, they’re a terrific group, and the people behind the scenes, a lot of the same ones are back for these two movies. I hope we do some more. In the end they kind of leave it open-ended and there’s a feeling that it will go on, and I hope it does. I feel like I’m kind of in a dream being back with everyone. It’s wonderful.”

Michael Shanks: “In the first film we are tying up what we didn’t get a chance to tie up at the end up the series, which is the Ori storyline that we’ve been doing for the last couple of years. It’s a very complex villain that we’ve created, it seems trite to cheat them in any way without fulfilling some sort of huge mission to take them down piece by piece, and we kind of have to do it all at once. I think the audience will be satisfied with the closure of the story, and some nice team moments and emotional moments, and everybody gets something to do which I think our audience usually enjoys.”

Stargate: The Ark of Truth is due to be released worldwide on DVD in the Spring of 2008.

Bridges Wins Lead in Lifetime Pilot "Family Practice"

Beau BridgesThe Hollywood Reporter has posted an announcement that Beau Bridges has won the lead role in a new Lifetime pilot called “Family Practice”:

Emmy winner Beau Bridges has been tapped to star in Lifetime’s drama pilot “Family Practice.”

“Practice,” from Sony Pictures TV and “Lost” co-creator Jeffrey Lieber, centers on a South Philly girl who becomes entangled personally and professionally with the affluent, Kennedyesque family members of one of the city’s most prestigious law firms.

Bridges will play the family’s patriarch, a brilliant, radical, Machiavellian lawyer who once defended the most controversial clients he could find. He is a peerless legal mind but not so successful as a father and a husband.

Bridges won Emmys for his roles in the telefilms “The Second Civil War,” “Without Warning: The James Brady Story” and “The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom.”

He earned his 11th Emmy nomination this year for his guest-starring role on NBC’s “My Name Is Earl.”

Bridges is repped by CAA.

Beau Bridges Nominated for Emmy

Stargate SG-1 veteran actor Beau Bridges has been nominated in the 59th Annual Emmy Awards in the “Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series” category for his role as Carl Hickey in My Name Is Earl.

In an article at Yahoo! News, Bridges reviews some of the physical demands made on him in playing in the half-hour comedy, shown on NBC on Thursdays. He commented, “They do things on the show that are just so bizarre and out of the box and that you just don’t see on television. But somehow, it has this very real place that it comes from. It’s very human, and I think that’s why it resonates with people.” Bridges talks about his attempts at break dancing and gerbil tossing on the show, some of them ending with physical injury.

According to his record at the IMDb, Bridges has won three Emmys thus far, and has had several nominations. This year, he might have some tough competition in his category, but he graciously admitted, “It’s just that old thing of being glad you’re invited to the party.”

You can download a copy of this year’s nominations from The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The ceremonies for the Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast on FOX at 8/7c on Sunday, September 16, 2007.

SG-1 Cast: What They're Doing Now

S10 Cast of Stargate SG-1
Cast of Stargate SG-1 from Season Ten and the two direct-to-DVD movies.

Solutions has gathered together a few pieces of information from around the web concerning what the cast members of Stargate SG-1 are doing to further their careers and family lives now that the filming of the two direct-to-DVD movies has completed.

Ben Browder

Ben Browder did an interview at The Scifi World and talked about what he enjoys doing in his spare time:

Right now… and my interests do change over time… I’m into coaching youth football. Next year I hope to coach the polevaulters at the high school. I suppose it falls into the I like working with young people category. Teaching kids, helping them meet and exceed expectations, watching them grow in the process is infinitely fascinating. And as a parent, I believe that we have a duty to whole of the next generation, not just our own progeny.

He’s also been mentioned as starting up a project for the Sci Fi Channel in a Variety article about NBC Universal’s cable networks:

Sci Fi is developing the six-hour miniseries “Going Homer,” from “Farscape” alum Ben Browder and Andrew Prowse. Taken from the Odyssey, project will revolve around a 12-year-old, Homer Ulysses Jones, who sets off on a journey from L.A. to New York in order to escape a custody battle. Homer is able to see what others can’t: Greek and Roman gods are here on earth, walking among mortals. Some gods will aid his journey, while others will seek to kill him in order to prevent him from getting home.

Look for Ben to appear at the Comic Con in San Diego on the Stargate: The Ark of Truth panel on Friday, July 27.

Amanda Tapping

Amanda Tapping has not left the Stargate franchise as she has moved over to star in Stargate Atlantis in its fourth season, currently in production in Vancouver. Filming for the series will be resuming Monday after the cast’s “shooting hiatus”. Amanda is scheduled to appear in 14 out of the 20 episodes for the season as Col. Samantha Carter, the new commander of the Atlantis Base. Her first appearance in the show will be in its premiere, “Adrift” (spoilers), which will be shown for the first time in the world on the Sci Fi Channel on Friday, September 28, 2007.

Following the end of filming for the fourth season, Amanda will be working on her new on-line serial Sanctuary. She told The Scifi World that she hopes they’ll produce ten more hours starting in October. These ten hours, if produced, will translate into 40 new webisodes.

Look for Amanda to appear in both the Stargate panels at the Comic Con in San Diego on Friday, July 27.

Christopher Judge

Christopher Judge wrote a few episodes for Stargate SG-1 and appeared in the most episodes of any regular cast member during its 10-year run. He hasn’t left the franchise completely either, as he will make an appearance in the Stargate Atlantis fourth season episode, “Reunion” (spoilers). There’s also another cross-over episode coming up in the second half of the season that might give Christopher the opportunity to appear again, but the specific actor crossing over has not yet been identified by executive producer Joseph Mallozzi in his personal blog (spoilers galore).

As far as his own projects, in his farewell interview at the scifi.com website, Christopher stated this about his pilot, Rage of Angels, which was picked up for production by MGM:

I play Gabriel and Shanks plays Lucifer. We’re going a bit against type, I would think. [He smiles.] I wrote the pilot for it. It’s a very dark, sexy, violent show, and I think that’s probably what we’ll be doing next.

Additionally, fellow Stargate actor and writer David Hewlett mentioned Christopher in his blog recently:

Speaking of Judge, I’ve got to get the nerve up to ask him about the latest film role I’ve started writing for him…it’s a pretty different kind of thing for him, but I think he’d be amazing at it and really chew up the scenery…hoping he goes for it… rather than turning on me violently, squashing me like a bug and leaving my crumpled form in the gutter beside some lonely road…happy thoughts, happy thoughts…

This film might be Hewlett’s script Design of the Dead.

Look for Christopher to appear at the Comic Con in San Diego on the Stargate: The Ark of Truth panel on Friday, July 27.

Claudia Black

According to John Stone’s Blog at TVGuide.com, Claudia Black will be appearing in the premiere of NBC’s new dramatic series Life as Jennifer Conover, the remarried ex-wife of the show’s main character, Charlie Crews, played by Damian Lewis. NBC’s description of the show:

Meet Detective Charlie Crews. Behind him sit tough years of hard prison time for a crime he didn’t commit. Ahead of him lie the challenges of a world that’s moved on without him. Now it’s time to walk through the painful cobwebs of his past and re-enter the scorn-filled halls of a job he loves. It’s no easy task, especially when his reluctant new partner is as jaded as Dani Reese. Charlie’s appreciation for life’s details not only offers up unique insights into each crime, it reminds us of all the little things we take for granted.

Claudia is not mentioned as part of the regular cast, and according to The Futon Critic, her appearance in the first episode is incredibly brief, but there’s always a possibility that she’ll be playing a recurring character on the new show. Life is scheduled to premiere Wednesday, September 26, at 10pm Eastern on NBC (see NBC’s Fall Preview webpage for more information).

Beau Bridges

Beau Bridges filmed a pilot for FOX entitled Two Families, but the half-hour comedy was not picked up for the fall schedule. Beau plays a recurring role in the half-hour comedy, My Name Is Earl, which is shown on Thursdays at 8pm Eastern on NBC. In the upcoming season, Beau has been contacted to reappear as Earl’s father, as he mentioned along with his other project recently in an interview with The Scifi World (Stargate spoilers therein):

Well, I’ve done a number of these “My Name is Earl” shows. I play Earl’s father. It’s a half-hour comedy. And I’ll be doing some more of those. I have a movie coming out that I did with Misha Barton, called Don’t Fade Away. It’s about a father who is dying and his relationship with his son. And Misha plays my son’s girlfriend.

Beau can also be seen in the George Clooney movie The Good German.

Michael Shanks

Michael Shanks closed out his TVGuide.com Blog on June 21 as Stargate SG-1 ended its TV run on the Sci Fi Channel on June 22. Since that time, he’s been mentioned in various press articles and has been the subject of interviews in recent sci-fi magazines.

Look for his picture on the cover of Cult Times #142 (July 2007), as well as for an excerpt from his interview entitled “So Long and Shanks” at the magazine’s website. Included in the interview not published in the excerpt, Michael talks about his Sci Fi Channel movie Mega Snake, currently scheduled for its premiere on Saturday, August 25, at 9pm Eastern.

“Oddly enough, it is about a large snake,” he chuckles. “It could be a porn film. I need to clarify that every now and again. Apparently they’ve lost their imagination when it comes to titles; I always hoped that was a working title. It is about a giant snake and I play a paramedic in an Appalachian town who is forced to deal with this large snake running amuck.”

In Issue 17 of the Official Magazine (SG-1 Yearbook), Michael talks about taking time to be with his family, “I’m going to get to know the little pint sized things that live in my house, that I haven’t got to know — I’m going to be a dad for a while! I’m so ready for some family time and some ‘me’ time.”

Michael also is working with Christopher Judge in producing and starring in the pilot Rage of Angels, but there’s been no more new information about how that is going. And their production company’s “The Men of Sci Fi Calendar” appears to be on hold, awaiting their availability.

Look for Michael to appear at the Comic Con in San Diego on the Stargate: The Ark of Truth panel on Friday, July 27.

Bridges Wins Lead Role in Fox's "Two Families"

Stargate SG-1 actor Beau Bridges (Gen. Hank Landry) has won the lead role in Fox’s Two Families pilot, according to The Hollywood Reporter:

Beau Bridges has been tapped to headline Fox’s comedy pilot “Two Families.”

“Two Families,” from 20th Century Fox TV and HIP, centers on a man (Bridges) with two families whose two sets of adult children don’t know the others exist. Emmy winner Bridges was most recently seen on the Sci Fi Channel’s “Stargate SG-1.”

Edited to add: Here’s what Variety has to say about Bridges’ new role:

Casting — Beau Bridges, seen recently in a recurring role on “My Name is Earl,” will star in the Fox comedy pilot “Two Families.” He’ll play David Sr., a man who gets into a car accident — and his secret, that he has been fathering two families, is revealed. 20th Century Fox TV and HBO Ind. Prods. produces.

Sci Fi Monday Night Snippets

The April 24th Sci Fi Monday SG-1 marathon was “One is Never Enough,” which included two two-parters from Season 7, “Heroes” and “The Lost City”. Below are the interview snippets shown throughout the night, courtesy of Elyse at sg1_spoilme. Thanks, Elyse!

Also this week, you can view very high quality Quicktime movies of the snippets at Farscapism.com. Well worth watching.

Ben Browder

“Well, what I think is interesting about the SG1 team is that it is continuing to change and evolve. You still have the core – you have Teal’c, you have Colonel Carter, you have Daniel – and in the last two years, we’ve added Landry, and Mitchell and this year we’ve added Vala, and you have a group of people who have saved the universe on countless times and now you have new people to come in and ask the stupid questions (said with big grin). ‘I’m sorry, we’re going through the gate, why?’ and ‘who is that? Great, okay, let’s go!’ (ends with thumbs up gesture).”

Michael Shanks

“Heroes, part one and two, really sort of delved into the character relationships in terms of what they mean, or what they could mean in our theoretical world, what they could mean to the outside world that we’re trying to represent, and uh, I think that was a great example of the characters interacting and making you care about them so that when all the explosions and bombs and the aliens are happening that you actually care about the characters so I think that’s one of my most favorite episodes, if that’s proper English.”

Amanda Tapping

“What I’ve enjoyed building over the last ten years is the relationship with Teal’c. They just really love each other and it’s so nice that they now express it. An arm around the shoulder, or a hug, or a look between the two of them that says everything, and Chris and I really enjoy playing that. Like yesterday we were shooting a moment with this new character Vala – Claudia Black’s character – and she went up and did something and we just shared a look that said everything, that we’d known each other so long, and that’s quintessentially what makes SG-1.”

Beau Bridges

“One of my favorites of last year was ‘Ripple Effect.’ I really enjoyed that. It was very imaginative, and I still get a thrill because it’s sort of new to me – all the sci-fi stuff, when you have clones of all these people, and it gets kind of tedious doing it, because there’s a lot of technical stuff going on. You have to shoot scenes over and over again to get those effects, but watching it, just as an audience, it made me giggle. I thought it was cool.”

Sci Fi Monday Snippets

Tonight’s theme seemed to be “episodes graced by the presence of Harry Maybourne,” but the interspersed interviews with the cast didn’t really touch on that. Here is a transcript of the snippets, with grateful thanks to Elyse of sg1_spoilme for writing them and giving us permission to use them.

Ben Browder

“Directors are like your children. You love them all equally, plus Andy Mikita? He’s da man! (grins) Andy Mikita directed the first episode that I did in Stargate so he has a very special place in my heart. And then Will, and Peter (Deluise). The relationship between an actor and a director is sometimes really quick. They come in, and they go, and then they come back again. You’re constantly dating new directors… Did I just say that out loud?” (laughs)

Claudia Black

“I really liked watching the Earth-based episodes on Stargate. I know what it’s like when they always go out on location and they’re in another forest… you know it’s another forest planet. And you know the trials and tribulations of finding unique locations. I don’t know if it’s because I personally have spent a few years working on another show (Farscape) in an alien environment but I’ll just be looking for the episodes that allow me to explore that more.”

Stargate Atlantis (Season 3 Sneak-Peak)

[visual: Dex from a flashback; director’s board, gate opening, director’s board, wraith in gray dingy complex, Atlantis rising SCIFI SNEAK PEAK, then…]

Announcer: “And now, an exclusive SciFi Channel sneak peek at an all new season of Stargate Atlantis”

Joe Flanigan: “We did just finish an episode that was pretty big.”

[visual: Sheppard aboard Daedalus, explosions, cut to Dex in new scene, firing guns with both hands, flinging himself across room.]

Jason Momoa: “My character was beating the **** out of everyone.”

[Teyla stickfighting with Michael from “Michael”, cut to scene of Wraith henchmen walking through village]

Rachel Luttrell: “Martial arts, different fighting technique…”

David Hewlett: “We’ve, like, blown up everything.”

Torri Higginson, but as WEIR: “Apparently he’s found something of interest.”

Joe Flanigan: It’s about as big as an episode as we shoot.

Announcer: Stargate Atlantis. New episodes return this July. Part of an all new SciFi Friday.

Michael Shanks

“I strongly believe that the success of the show has been about good storytelling and the chemistry of the original cast, and it’s never going to be the same as the original group but we don’t want it to be. That was it’s own puritanical, wonderful thing. And this group – what is the most important thing is the audience needs to care about these people – if they don’t, then all the explosions and things blowing up is for naught. I mean these people are in jeopardy; you really have to worry ‘are they going make it?’ because I care about them, and the characters care about each other, then the audience will too.”

Beau Bridges

“I think what’s remarkable as a newcomer sort of on their team is they’re very relaxed as performers and comfortable in the skin of their characters. Through that relaxation you get a lot of sort of surprises, which I think is good. The guy who keeps us laughing, of course, is Chris Judge. Sometimes it’s hard to get down to the serious job of killing aliens when Chris starts fooling around, but he’s a professional, and we have a good time on the set.”

SciFi Wire: SG-1 Gears Up for Season Ten

SciFi Wire interviews Beau Bridges

Beau BridgesSciFi Wire has published a portion of an interview conducted with actor Beau Bridges who was in Pasadena recently. Bridges enthuses over his return to Stargate SG-1 for its record-breaking tenth season as Gen. Hank Landry. No longer the new guy on the set, Bridges looks forward to giving his fellow cast members a “bad time.”

Filming for Season Ten begins with the season premiere, “Flesh and Blood”, on February 20 in Vancouver.
