Flanigan in Ireland Shooting "The Other Side"

Stargate Atlantis star Joe Flanigan is currently shooting a movie in Ireland called The Other Side. He’s keeping his fans informed through his new Twitter account.

Here’s what he’s had to say thus far about his new adventure, the most recent on top:

The “Otherside” for ScyFy. I play a Marine colonel stuck in a parallel dimension. Working with John Rys-Davies this morning. Great actor

Enjoying shooting in Ireland. I’ve shot two pheasant, a deer and someone last night who tried to steal my Guiness. Watch out Hewlett!

First day of shooting. Great cast and crew. Pints tonight for everyone!

At Druid Glen Golf Club. Hard to play golf and hold pints. Something must give. God Bless Ireland

that plane had a lot of alcohol. Anyway, I’m here at the LongHaul Pub in Dublin discussing film. God bless the motherland!

The Other Side is a joint effort between RHI Entertainment and Syfy. Here’s the synopsis from RHI Entertainment’s TOS website:

It was a groundbreaking device designed to glimpse alternate universes and government commissioned by a brilliant physicist. But the machine malfunctioned on its first presentation, transporting a group of observers into a nightmarish new dimension. The team quickly must use ingenuity and courage to outwit, outplay and outlast the native man-eating creatures of this bizarre new world while doing their best to repair the damaged machine. Even if they stay alive, without a working transport, they may never make it back home.

Flanigan stars as Colonel Sam Synn, Dagmar Doring as Doctor Jillian O’Hara, John Rhys-Davies as Senator Jackson Crenshaw, Catherine Walker as Doctor Karen Fast, Yare Jegbefune as Lt. Rivers, Rob Soohan as Brian Murphy, and Chris Newman as Pvt. Jordan Reid.

This movie, written by Douglas G. Davis (Carny), and another named Roadkill are two new projects being co-produced by RHI Entertainment and Syfy.

In a press release about these movies, Syfy’s Thomas Vitale, Executive Vice President, Programming and Original Movies, said, “We’ve enjoyed a long and productive relationship with RHI, whose movies have been popular with our savvy television audience. We’re looking forward to premiering these action-packed and entertaining movies as part of our hit Saturday night original movie block.”

Robert Halmi, Jr., President, RHI Entertainment, added, “We love both of these scripts and we are looking forward to seeing them on the screen. Both stories are filled with action, suspense, special effects and great imagination. We anticipate a great reception from the international community while at MIP TV.”

We’ll be sure to keep an eye on Flanigan as he tweets his way through his adventure in his “motherland”!

First Images, Video of Joe Flanigan by Martin Firrell

As we reported here in May, the modern artist Martin Firrell has done a study of Joe Flanigan (Stargate Atlantis) as part of his Sci Fi series exploring the deeper significance of popular science fiction. Martin has just posted “a glimpse of a work in progress” of his study of Joe, including still images and some particularly stylistic video in which Joe speaks about the effects of action heroes on women, John Sheppard’s feelings, and the impact on a man of having kids. Definitely worth a visit for all Joe Flanigan and John Sheppard fans!

Update on Beau Bridges: NBC Rejects "The Rockford Files"

NBC has decided not to pick up the remake of The Rockford Files as a new fall series. This announcement comes before their Upfronts, scheduled for Monday, May 17.

Stargate star Beau Bridges was cast as Rocky, the father and best friend of the lead character Jim Rockford, but even with a strong cast, the pilot did not meet expectations.

Columnist Nellie Andreeva of Deadline Hollywood made the announcement in her article “PRIMETIME PILOT PANIC: ‘Rockford Files’ Is Now Dead At NBC”. She reported, “The first signs of trouble came in the casting stage when it took a long time to cast the lead famously played by James Garner on the original series as several offers to A-list actors didn’t pan out. But feedback from the audition of Dermot Mulroney, who has strong improv background, was great, and the pilot, which co-starred Alan Tudyk and Beau Bridges, went underway with Michael Watkins at the helm. However, NBC was underwhelmed by the completed pilot. It then underwent major recutting, which was reportedly done by the editor of one of NBC’s top drama pilots this year, the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced Chase. But, while an improvement vs. the original cut, the new version of the pilot still didn’t impress NBC brass enough to muster a series order.”

Even though she announced that the show was “now dead at NBC,” Andreeva closed with the somewhat encouraging note, “Still, a redevelopment of the concept is a possibility.” If that means recasting, several Stargate Atlantis fans and film, television, and video game producer Jace Hall may get to reopen their campaign to get Joe Flanigan in the Jim Rockford role. But of course, there’s no replacing Beau Bridges as Rocky!

Modern Artist Makes a Study of Joe Flanigan

The British artist Marin Firrell (website, twitter, wikipedia) has made Joe Flanigan of Stargate Atlantis his latest subject. French-born Firrell, who blends his public art with social commentary, has displayed both text and images in prominent locations around London. He has a particular interest in science fiction, and his recent “Complete Hero” project featured Nathan Fillion, who played Mal in Firefly/Serenity. Firrell projected images of Fillion and others on The Guards Chapel in London in November of 2009. From the Complete Hero website:

Complete Hero explores and celebrates contemporary ideas of heroism with contributions from men and women of the Household Division and wider army, from the public, and from writers, thinkers and performers. The Guard’s Chapel — destroyed in WW2 during Sunday morning worship and rebuilt in 1963 — makes a poignant backdrop for this exploration of the meaning and value of heroism in our lives.

Firrell tweeted that he’d wanted to work with Joe Flanigan for a long time; he was finally able to do so this week, in a photo/video shoot and interview on Monday May 10. He intends for this work to be part of an extension of his Hero project.

Joe Flanigan in studio of Martin FirrellBefore the shoot, he asked his twitter audience to name Sheppard’s best and worst qualities and asked for questions for Joe. On the day of the shoot, he tweeted: “Extraordinarily rich and interesting shoot with Joe Flanigan. The man is a legend.” and “Yay my brilliant assistant Kate, Project Director Emma, Camera and sound (Charlie and Christian) and top hair tamer Kat!” and described Joe as: “Generous, charming, smart, humane, thoughtful, funny, full of ideas about the value of sci fi, cult, very respectful of fandom”.

Firell also gave a fascinating interview to SFX as to how he came to work with Joe and how it fits into his Heroes project:

SFX: The Complete Hero projections were this past November in London (SFX’s Dave B and Stuart were there!). Will we be seeing anything more from this project in the future?

Martin: The project has never really gone away. One of my interests in working with Joe Flanigan was to extend the reach of Complete Hero to reach the Atlantis fandom, just as Nathan is the great figure in the Firefly/Serenity fandom, but I am also interested in moving closer to science fiction – the next incarnation of Complete Hero will be very sci-fi centric.

As far as what he did with Joe during the shoot:

But today in the studio we did some familiar stuff – some beautiful studies by candlelight of Joe’s face (in a direct parallel with the portraiture of Nathan) and some new stuff, some green screen work, and I am interested in the idea of video ‘noise’ as part of the ‘look’ of this new work. I also experimented with a computer program which created a kind of starburst for projection onto Joe’s face which worked well.”

He also revealed that he had originally thought about photographing Joe a couple of years ago but had not been able to reach him through his management. So it was actually a sci-fi pod-caster who gave Martin’s email address to Joe at a sci fi convention. Joe emailed Martin, and the rest was just finding a common opening in their schedules.

There’s no word on when the results of Martin and Joe’s efforts will be published or projected, but we’ll definitely keep an eye out for it!

Stargate SG-1 character-focused comic books are being developed by Dynamite. Stargate: Vala Mal Doran is written by Brandon Jerwa and involves Vala in an “Ocean’s Eleven” type heist. It’s supposed to be released in May. Stargate: Daniel Jackson, written by Doug Murray, focuses on Jackson’s “voice of reason” and intellect while going on a classic SG-1 adventure.

On our Twitter, we provided a link to Chicago Tribune‘s Maureen Ryan’s review of the Supernatural episode in which Michael Shanks briefly appeared. Do you agree with those among Ryan’s readers that his role was way too small (although he did warn us that it would be so)?
