News Flashes and Brief Follow-Ups

  • SG-1 in 'Window of Opportunity' in Season FourFranchise – With news that the Stargate franchise as we know it will end in a few weeks with the airing of SGU’s final episode “Gauntlet,” executive producer Joseph Mallozzi has begun to look back on his time with the productions, starting in Season Four of Stargate SG-1. He’s posting a series of entries dedicated to each season that he and writing partner Paul Mullie were in Vancouver, a place that they thought they would only be for a couple of years! Start reading his “Days of Stargate Past” in his April 22nd and April 23rd entries. Sadly, these reminiscent entries were sparked by the fact that they will start “de-rigging” Stage 5: “Stage 5, as you may or may not know, was home to Stargate: Universe’s Icarus base but, for many, many years before that, it held the standing sets for Stargate: SG-1: the SGC corridors, the infirmary, the control room, the briefing, Hammond’s office (later occupied by O’Neill, then Landry) and, of course, the gate room. Sad times indeed.”

No mention at all was made, although we do know that his home world survived the Ori invasion. In response to fans’ disappointment and questions whether or not it was even considered to mention Jonas, Mallozzi wrote, “Yes, in fact I gave a note at the script stage that, at the very least, some mention should be made about the fact that Jonas Quinn had retired from public office. Don’t know what happened but it obviously didn’t make it onscreen.”

Most of SGU's sets remain standing.
Blogging executive producer Joseph Mallozzi has moved out of Bridge Studios to join Robert C. Cooper and Paul Mullie on a new project in Toronto. In the meantime, Brad Wright and Carl Binder are keeping the home fires burning for the Stargate franchise. Mallozzi hasn’t stopped reporting what he can about the state of the franchise, however. In one of his recent “mailbag” exchanges, Mallozzi addressed concerns about the status of SGU’s sets. “For now, I believe the plan is to strike the sets on Stage 6 (the cave and Homeworld Command which were doubtful to be used moving forward anyway). The standing sets (the Destiny corridors, observation deck, gate room over on Stage 4 and the bridge, shuttle, and mess over on Stage 5) will remain standing until we hear definite word that we will not be proceeding with production on any movie(s). And, sorry to say, no news to report on that front.” He also confirmed that there will be no set tours at the upcoming Vancouver Con (April 14-17). “I was actually there on Thursday when they were discussing it and the issue was one of costs for lighting up the sets. Even without full lighting, it would have been quite pricey.” On a closing encouraging note, he wrote, “The fact that the sets are still standing is a good sign. It costs money to keep them up/the stages rented, so, at the very least, this does demonstrate a desire to see the production move forward in some form.”
  • Blastr: John Scalzi’s epic novel Old Man’s War heading to the big screen. Scalzi was Creative Consultant with SGU.

Amanda Tapping Joins William Shatner for Animated Webseries

Stargate star Amanda Tapping will be joining sci-fi legend William Shatner in a new animated webseries, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Here’s their press release:

William Shatner and Amanda Tapping to Co-Star in Web Drama
2:47 PM 1/31/2011 by Etan Vlessing

Acting duo will voice online animated series for MyOuterspace.com, Shatner’s social website.

TORONTO – What happens at Comic-Con apparently goes online: William Shatner and Amanda Tapping (Sanctuary, Stargate SG-1) are teaming up in The Zenoids, an animated series to launch on Shatner’s social website MyOuterspace.com.

The actors met last summer at the San Diego comic book geekfest for the launch of MyOuterspace.com, with Tapping recalling that she joked at the time they should do a show together.

“Who knew it would come true?” Tapping asked after Shatner recently rang her out of the blue with a co-starring role on four webisodes to start production in late February.

The Zenoids portrays a family of space-faring Amphibinoid musicians who travel the galaxy performing their musical act, with Shatner and Tapping as a husband-and-wife team trying to keep their superstar dreams alive.

The online drama will cloud-source for story-lines by asking Shatner fans to submit scripts through an online submission process, with one winning script to be produced as an animated short webisode of The Zenoids.

Make sure to visit MyOuterspace.com for more information about this new project.

Here’s a YouTube video in which Shatner interviewed Tapping for MyOuterspace.com, emphasizing the web-to-television transition that Sanctuary paved the way for other projects, including this particular new endeavor. He admiringly told her, “You’ve done what we want to do.”

Tapping's "Sanctuary" Gets Season Four

Cast of SANCTUARY (Syfy Photo: Pete Tangen)
Congratulations to the cast and crew of Amanda Tapping‘s Sanctuary for getting the go for a fourth season on Syfy!

Here’s the official press release, reported by Chicago Now’s Show Patrol:

New York, NY – January 18, 2011 – Syfy has greenlit production on a fourth season of Sanctuary, it was announced today by Mark Stern, President, Original Programming, Syfy & Co-Head, Original Programming, Universal Cable Productions. Sanctuary season 4 is slated to commence production on a 13-episode season in spring 2011 in Vancouver, BC with an eye towards a fall 2011 premiere on Syfy.

Sanctuary follows brilliant scientist Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) and her team, who use their unique combination of instinct, medicine and cutting-edge science to find and aid a clandestine population of beings that the world refuses to believe exists. The series also stars Robin Dunne as forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman, Agam Darshi as the quick-witted Kate Freelander, Ryan Robbins as tech wiz Henry Foss and Christopher Heyerdahl as the sinister John Druitt.

One of television’s most groundbreaking series, shooting almost entirely on green screen, Sanctuary was the first television series in North America to use the RED camera exclusively. Its stunning visual effects were nominated for a 2008 Emmy Award.

Created by Damian Kindler (Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis), Sanctuary is produced in association with Syfy and is distributed by Tricon Films and Television. Season three of the series is executive produced by Damian Kindler, Amanda Tapping, Martin Wood, Keith Beedie and Tricon Films.

Sanctuary is currently in winter hiatus, but will be returning to Syfy in April.
