Stargate Universe: 2.07 "The Greater Good"

Young and Rush board derelict spaceship in THE GREATER GOOD (MGM)
Rush gets sidetracked when he and Young board a derelict spaceship in THE GREATER GOOD (MGM)
Tonight (November 9) on Syfy at 9 PM ET: Stargate Universe episode 2.07 “The Greater Good”, written by Carl Binder and directed by William Waring.

“Always consider the greater good. That’s it,” Dr. Nicholas Rush advised Lt. Tamara Johansen when she was given command of Destiny for the first time.

These may sound like wise words, but considering the source, one does have to question his sincerity considering that he’s hiding the discovery of the ship’s master code, its bridge, and how to control when the Destiny enters and exits FTL. There are still several systems to discover and gain control of, evident by the number of empty seats on the bridge, but Rush is of the mind-set that “Ultimately, I control this ship.” He wants to continue to sit on the bridge alone and in command. But Destiny itself has shown that it has its own agenda. After the revelation that the ship can play the “what if” game within Young’s mind to test his command capability, what’s to say that the ship isn’t manipulating Rush similarly?

Actor Robert Carlyle loves talking about this episode and the one that follows, especially since they delve into where Rush stands in Season Two. He’s on the verge of discovering Destiny‘s mission, and he’s made this discovery his and Chloe’s highest priority.

“I can’t tell you what the mission is,” Carlyle teased in an interview with The Flick Cast, “but I can tell you there is a mission and it’s massive. The clue is in the title of the ship: Destiny. The ship is named that for a reason and perhaps all of these people are there for a reason. It starts to really become an adventure.”

After getting in on the beginning of the crew’s new adventure, make sure to rejoin us here for our episode poll on the front page.

SYFY: Dr. Rush and Col. Young are stranded aboard an alien ship.

Destiny comes upon a heavily damaged ship floating in space. Dr. Rush suggests that the alien vessel be explored in the hopes of salvaging any worthwhile data or technology. Without a shuttle, Rush and Col. Young must make a dangerous space-suited expedition to the derelict ship. Once safely aboard, they discover that the ship contains empty pods similar to those they encountered on the seed ship. As Dr. Rush gets the life support and power running, the ship’s engines suddenly engage, propelling it away from Destiny. With the power now depleted the ships drift helplessly apart.

Unwilling to tell everyone that he has partial control of the Destiny, Rush claims he has been working on a program to manually fire Destiny‘s thrusters. Because of the complexity of the program he suggests Dr. Amanda Perry be brought on board via the communication stones to help. Once aboard, Rush covertly informs her of his success with Destiny‘s master code and directs her to the bridge. With Rush’s help, Perry is able to steer Destiny back to the damaged ship. But when Eli unearths their plan, the big secret is revealed much to Rush’s chagrin—especially when Young finds out.

SKY: The Destiny is left stranded in space after an encounter with a damaged ship. While Young goes into panic mode, Rush refuses to divulge a valuable secret.

But as the Doc gets the power up and running, the ship’s engines suddenly engage, propelling it away from the Destiny and leaving it stranded in space. If he isn’t able to direct his fans via Twitter when his episodes will air, we’ll just have to keep our eyes open for him at 9 PM ET on Wednesday nights on The CW. If we do happen to miss his appearance, The CW posts full episodes online for later viewing.

  • Michael Shanks – There was some confusion as to which Tower Prep episode Michael Shanks was to make his appearance as Professor Literature. MSOL investigated and determined that his episode, titled “Book Report”, will air November 16.
  • SG-1 and SGA Portals – Each Friday, a new feature is posted to the Portal pages. This past Friday, we worked from the keyword prompt “mutations”. Brad Wright: SG-1, Atlantis Fans Hurt Stargate Universe

SGU 1.5 DVD CoverIn this opinion piece, SciFi Now author James Rundle notes that Universe needs fan support now more than ever, pointing out that its ratings have plummeted for Season 2. He also asks Stargate Atlantis fans to stop punishing Stargate Universe for not being Atlantis, quoting the actors’ disappointment over some lack of fan acceptance. He also quotes Brad Wright on the topic:

“I don’t think if we for any reason go away, it is an issue necessarily of the quality of the product that we’ve been making,” said executive producer and co-creator Brad Wright. “I think getting moved on the schedule has hurt us. And the fact that some of the fans that liked SG-1 and Atlantis were so angry that they have deliberately hurt us, which is unfortunate.”

What do you think? Has whatever negative fan reaction that exists been fueled primarily by Universe being new and not SG-1 or Atlantis? Has fandom negativity in turn affected Nielsen ratings? Feel free to sound off in the comments.

Brad Wright: Please Watch My Show

In a new interview at Blastr (formerly SciFiWire), Brad Wright gives viewers eight reasons to watch Stargate Universe. He uses hints from upcoming episodes as enticement, noting many open story lines will be addressed. Among these are Rush’s discovery of the bridge, the fate of the crew members who stayed behind in Season One’s “Faith”, the stress of dealing with Lucian Alliance member Simeon, and the progress of Chloe’s alien transformation. Referring to the first half of SGU’s second season, Wright says:

“I feel like the show has never been better and that there are folks who are digging it. The first 10 are just terrific. Obviously I’m proud of everything, but we did listen to some of the criticisms earlier on and worked on increasing the pace and increasing the adventure of the show, without changing the show entirely.”

Likely in reaction to the lower Nielsen ratings for SGU’s airing on Syfy channel this year, Wright makes a direct plea:

Wright has a request for fans. “Please watch my show. … I mean, ‘I’m loving the show. I downloaded it,’ … that does not keep us on the air. Viewers have to watch our show live on the same day, otherwise our television show is going to go away,” he said.

Visit Blastr to read the entire interview.

Stargate Universe: 2.06 "Trial and Error"

Col. Young in TRIAL AND ERROR (MGM)
TRIAL AND ERROR focuses on Young's decline that causes him to question his ability to command (MGM)

Tonight (November 2) on Syfy at 9 PM ET: Stargate Universe episode 2.06 “Trial and Error”, written by Paul Mullie (and Joseph Mallozzi) and directed by Andy Mikita.

“‘Trial and Error’ begins a series of GAME-CHANGING eps,” actor David Blue tweeted recently. “Season-long arcs & crazy-cool new discoveries. Love it.”

And as it turns out, he’s not the only one thrilled with this episode. Paul Mullie’s writing partner Joseph Mallozzi wrote in his weblog, “Today, we sat down to watch Andy Mikita’s director’s cut of Trial and Error, one of my favorite episodes of SGU’s second season. And that’s saying someting given that I wasn’t initially onboard with the story when it was first pitched. Well, one terrific script and a solid week of production behind us, and we’ve got ourselves an amazing episode…”

The praise doesn’t stop there, either. Mallozzi wrote in another entry, “Three of the actors flagged me down to tell me how much they loved Trial and Error. Especially scene 61! I thanked them, but told them that episode 6 was all Paul. And I have to agree with their assessment. Trial and Error is, in my (and Carl [Binder]’s) opinion, the best script Paul has ever written. And, to date, he’s written some damn terrific ones for Stargate: Universe = a significant pass on Justice, then Divided (one of my personal favorites), Subversion, Intervention, and Trial and Error. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that Paul is at the top of his game.”

While writer Paul Mullie might be “at the top of his game,” Destiny commander Col. Everett Young is far below it as he struggles with his personal life, excessive reliance on alcohol, and realistic, but troubling, prophetic visions. It’s enough to make him question both his sanity and his ability to lead. Everyone aboard is affected by his actions, but whether that means in a good way or in a bad way—in life or in death—remains to be seen.

After getting in on the beginning of new season-long arcs, make sure to rejoin us here for our episode poll on the front page.

SYFY: A series of realistic visions cause Col. Young to question his ability as commander of Destiny.

Dr. Rush visits Chloe in isolation, hoping she might look over some calculations he’s been working on – but Chloe is more concerned with the alien influence that has begun to affect not just her mind but her body as well.

Eventually, Col. Young goes to Wray and admits his fear that he may be losing his mind. But when Destiny drops out of FTL and remains adrift, Rush and Eli suspect that the Colonel’s strange visions may be the key to getting the ship back on course.

SKY: Col Young fears he’s losing his mind in an all-new episode of the gripping galaxy-sprawling saga.

Plagued by a recurring vision in which the Destiny is attacked and destroyed by the same aliens who abducted Rush and Chloe, Young places the crew on high alert and orders the science team to work on the ship’s weapon systems. Is it some kind of prophetic warning or is Young being paranoid?

Meanwhile, Rush visits Chloe in isolation for help with some calculations, but she’s more concerned about the alien influence that has begun to affect her body as well as her mind. Stargate Universe's Humor Is in the Outtakes

Where has Stargate’s trademark humor gone? Behind the scenes and in the outtakes, apparently.

Introduced by Joseph Mallozzi in his weblog, this “outtake” of Lou Diamond Phillips and guest star shows the two taking a moment to share a joke.

Mallozzi wrote the episode “Awakening” in which these new aliens were introduced and was thrilled with the artistry of the VFX team led by Mark Savela. “The movements are fluid and incredibly life-like, the body language and the subtlest of glances alone imbuing the characters with personality.”

Apparently, the VFX team loved working with these new characters as well, so they let the camera continue to roll…
