From PR-USA.net: “Documentary Channel (DOC) commemorates U.S. soldiers with a line up of outstanding military themed documentaries in a two-day tribute to Memorial Day on Monday, May 30 and Tuesday, May 31. Never seen before on television, the two-hour theatrical version of “Operation Homecoming” airs Monday, May 30, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT). […] The Oscar nominated “Operation Homecoming” is a unique documentary that explores the firsthand accounts of American troops through their written words, and offers a profound window into the human side of the war in Iraq. “Operation Homecoming” evolved out of a National Endowment for the Arts project that gathered the writing of soldiers and their families who have participated in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Interviews and dramatic readings by such actors as Robert Duvall, Josh Lucas, BEAU BRIDGES, Blaire Underwood and Justin Kirk transform selections from this collection of writing into a deep examination of the experiences of the men and women who are serving in America’s armed forces.”

  • Jonas Quinn as a member of SG-1Jonas Quinn Fans! – Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi had stated in an earlier weblog entry that there was supposed to be a mention of Jonas Quinn in last week’s episode “Seizure.” SG-1 fans who tuned in to find out what has become of the former team member were disappointed! No mention at all was made, although we do know that his home world survived the Ori invasion. In response to fans’ disappointment and questions whether or not it was even considered to mention Jonas, Mallozzi wrote, “Yes, in fact I gave a note at the script stage that, at the very least, some mention should be made about the fact that Jonas Quinn had retired from public office. Don’t know what happened but it obviously didn’t make it onscreen.”

Stargate Universe: 2.15 "Seizure" (Atlantis Crossover)

Robert Picardo as Richard WoolseyDavid Hewlett as Dr. Rodney McKay

Richard Woolsey and Dr. Rodney McKay are involved in politics
and science in SEIZURE

Tonight at 10 PM ET on Syfy—and later this week in Canada and Australia—is Stargate Universe episode 2.15 “Seizure,” written by Remi Aubuchon and directed by Helen Shaver.

This episode has been called the “Atlantis Crossover” because David Hewlett and Robert Picardo guest star as Dr. Rodney McKay and Richard Woolsey, respectively, but the city of Atlantis is not being highlighted in the story. Instead, the planet Langara is visited by McKay, Woolsey, and Col. David Telford as they negotiate to use the planet’s naquadria-powered Stargate to send supplies to Destiny. This planet’s name should sound familiar to SG-1’s Jonas Quinn/Corin Nemec fans, as this is the former team member’s home world. Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi stated that “there should be” a mention of what has become of Quinn after his world was overtaken by the Ori in the SG-1 episode 10.07 “Counterstrike.”

Langaran Stargate
Langara's Stargate Facility (MGM)
Another major guest star in tonight’s episode is Victor Garber (Alias, Titanic), acclaimed stage and film actor, who portrays Langaran Ambassador Ovirda. The Langarans as a whole have recovered from the Ori War, and have even built a more elaborate facility in which to house their Stargate, but Ovirda is wary of Earth’s use of their Stargate to dial the ninth chevron because, admittedly, the previous uses of a planet’s naquadria core have resulted in utter destruction! To mount even greater tension is the threat of the Lucian Alliance who may also wish to use the Langaran Stargate to invade Destiny.

It’s a jam-packed episode that is sure to touch on much of the mythology of the entire franchise, including the newest storyline concerning Amanda Perry and Ginn, who are now part of the crew as avatars! After viewing, make sure to rejoin us here for our episode poll on the front page.

Most of SGU's sets remain standing.
Blogging executive producer Joseph Mallozzi has moved out of Bridge Studios to join Robert C. Cooper and Paul Mullie on a new project in Toronto. In the meantime, Brad Wright and Carl Binder are keeping the home fires burning for the Stargate franchise. Mallozzi hasn’t stopped reporting what he can about the state of the franchise, however. In one of his recent “mailbag” exchanges, Mallozzi addressed concerns about the status of SGU’s sets. “For now, I believe the plan is to strike the sets on Stage 6 (the cave and Homeworld Command which were doubtful to be used moving forward anyway). The standing sets (the Destiny corridors, observation deck, gate room over on Stage 4 and the bridge, shuttle, and mess over on Stage 5) will remain standing until we hear definite word that we will not be proceeding with production on any movie(s). And, sorry to say, no news to report on that front.” He also confirmed that there will be no set tours at the upcoming Vancouver Con (April 14-17). “I was actually there on Thursday when they were discussing it and the issue was one of costs for lighting up the sets. Even without full lighting, it would have been quite pricey.” On a closing encouraging note, he wrote, “The fact that the sets are still standing is a good sign. It costs money to keep them up/the stages rented, so, at the very least, this does demonstrate a desire to see the production move forward in some form.”

Corin Nemec Stars in "Sand Sharks"

Stargate star Corin Nemec leads the cast in the new nature-gone-wrong-at-the-festival movie Sand Sharks, currently in production and being directed by Mark Atkins.

Dread Central has the synopsis:

An underwater earthquake cracks open a crater deep beneath the ocean surface unleashing a prehistoric predator. On the sleepy island of White Sands local teens drink and party beside a beach bonfire. One of them, wandering off after a pretty girl, disappears leaving only a severed hand behind. It appears it’s been bitten and ripped off by a vicious animal attack. This looks like a shark bite, but it’s found well above the high tide line, it can’t be a shark… Or can it?

Jimmy Green (Corin Nemec), prodigal party boy and son of the mayor, returns home to White Sands, with a scheme to breathe some life into the dying economy (and clear his debt to a mobster) by throwing a huge spring break party, the Sandman Festival. Jimmy runs into his ex, and now Deputy Sheriff, Brenda Young (Vanessa Lee Evigan). She and her brother the Sheriff want to close the islands beaches in fear of further shark attacks which would ruin Jimmy’s plans. Brenda calls in an expert, shark scientist Dr. Sandy Powers (Brooke Hogan), meanwhile the attacks continue to ensue.

Dr. Powers says it appears to be a sand shark, a beast which moves through the sand as if it was water. By accident, the shark is electrocuted, but it’s soon discovered that that shark, though gigantic, was only a baby. The festival continues, thousands of college kids arrive, just as dozens of sand sharks make their presence known having been attracted by the vibrations of crowd and the PA system. The most menacing beasts to ever rule the waters, now rule the sand; mercilessly feeding on anything that crosses their path. It’s a giant feeding frenzy and it’s up to Brenda, Sandy, the Sherriff, and Jimmy to stop the carnage.

Nemec mentioned this new project last month while attending Creation Entertainment’s Salute to Supernatural convention in San Francisco, but right now, there’s no more information about when or where the new film will be released.

We’re in the process of trying to verify with MSOL whether or not tonight’s episode of the Cartoon Network’s Tower Prep is the one in which Michael Shanks has the role as Professor Literature. We were under the impression that the episode he appeared in was directed by Stargate alum Peter DeLuise, but the information in the IMDb record for tonight’s episode says differently. If you miss watching at 8 PM ET/PT, the show’s official website posts the episodes for later viewing online. [NOTE: MSOL has since confirmed that Michael’s episode is going to air on November 16.]

Wednesday, November 3 Gemini Awards 25Tonight is the Industry Gala for the 25th Annual Gemini Awards, and we’ll learn if our SGU nominees will be taking home their trophies:

News Notes

News Flashes and Brief Follow-Ups

  • SG-1 and SGA Portals – Each Friday, a new feature is posted to the Portal pages. This past Friday, we worked from the keyword prompt “prophets”. Who comes to mind when you hear that word? Visit the SG-1 Portal to discuss “Merlin: Secret Prophet” and the SGA Portal to discuss “Davos: He Was Never Wrong”. This Friday, the key word is “mutations”, so check back to find out what that means for our shows.

Stargate Universe Press

It should be noted that whenever spoilers come out for SGU, they are placed in the episode guides in the Stargate Wiki without much fanfare here in the News Blog. However, we should note that the episode guides for “The Greater Good” and “Malice” were updated with spoiler summaries recently. To keep on top of such updates, visit the main page of the Stargate Wiki to see the “Recent Updates” list of links.
