  • Robert Picardo – Apologies to Picardo fans! We hadn’t heard that he’d be a guest star on Supernatural on November 19 in the episode “Clap Your Hands If You Believe …”! Good news, though: The CW will be posting the episode online soon so you can still catch his appearance!
  • David Hewlett – He wasn’t in last week’s episode of Hellcats as we were expecting. The show will be on a brief break and will return December 1, so we’ll be on the look-out for him as Dr. Eagan then.

  • Michael Shanks – MSOL has announced that Shanks has completed the filming of the Smallville episode “Icarus” and is heading straight into filming a new movie role. Shanks informed his official website about his new project, “The movie is called Hangar 14. Starring Stone Cold Steve Austin, I play the baddie Russian Gangster Demetrius. Films in Squamish [British Columbia] for a few weeks.” These projects meant that he had to cancel his appearance at the Chevron 7.5 convention this weekend.

Creation Los Angeles Con: News and Gallery

The Creation Stargate Convention in Los Angeles, California took place this past weekend, November 5-7. Below is a round-up of news to come out of the con, in particular related to upcoming work and on-screen appearances for actors Joe Flanigan and Michael Shanks. The other actors are busy with their current series, while Michael and Joe have a bunch of things in the works, and we know their fans always appreciate knowing when they can expect to see them in new roles.

Please also head on over to our gallery for a selection of close-up pictures of Joe Flanigan, Michael Shanks, Elyse Levesque, Brian J. Smith, and Chris Heyerdahl!

Joe Flanigan

Joe Flanigan’s 2-hour movie, a back-door pilot currently called Best Laid Plans, will air in the US on Fox on Saturday, January 8, 2011. The project is not yet in IMDB, but we’ll provide a link whenever that happens. Whether the show becomes a series or not depends partly on the ratings for the movie/pilot, and partly on negotiations between the production studio and Fox Network. What’s unusual is that the producers are Procter & Gamble and Walmart, in other words, major advertisers rather than traditional production studios. They won’t try to sell the show to the network, but rather buy the entire hour of advertising from Fox. If the parties can agree on terms, Joe will be the lead of the series, co-starring with Brooke White, a former American Idol contestant.

The sci-fi movie he worked on in Ireland, The Other Side , turned out to have a lot more comedy than was on the written page. Both Joe and the director decided it shouldn’t take itself too seriously. When they saw the cut, the network asked, “what is this? where is our movie” Joe had a blast doing it and feels it should be a lot better than Hewlett’s snow monkey movie. 🙂 There’s no word yet on what The Other Side might air.

The independent film Joe was in, A Good Day For It, is currently being screened in LA in hopes a distributor will sign on to market and release it.

Joe hasn’t heard anything about a Stargate Atlantis movie. He doesn’t understand why it hasn’t been made yet, given fan support. He spoke to someone involved with the company who has taken over MGM and encouraged them to realize the immense value of the overlooked Stargate franchise. He said, “I think what kind of destroyed the franchise, in some ways, was ego and vanity. When that element of ego and vanity that’s sitting there in the franchise right now gets pushed aside, I think the whole thing could be re-tooled. I think it’s the type of franchise that has years in it, and has lots of legs.”

Finally, the mini fan “campaign” to get Joe to play Jim Rockford in a Rockford Files reboot backfired in that the production and network got very annoyed by all of the emails clogging up their lines of communication. However, Joe thinks it was still a great thing to do, and he’s all for another fan campaign for him to play Nathan Drake in the movie adaptation of the video game Uncharted. Visit the link to add your voice to the IMDB message board for the movie!

Michael Shanks

Michael Shanks recently filmed an episode of Fox’s The Good Guys, called “Supercops“. As episode 18 of Season 1, it should be airing in very soon, perhaps as early as November 19, 2010, on Fox. Michael plays a jerk of a SWAT team leader, and producer Matt Nix told him he’s so good at it, he could make a career out of playing jerks.

He is currently filming another episode of Smallville, “Icarus”,  which will be episode 11 of Season 10. It’s scheduled to air on The CW on December 10, 2010, according to IMDB. This time they’re using digital wings for him, and he’s hoping they’re more realistic looking, not to mention easier to manage on set. He appears as both Hawkman and Carter Hall in the episode.

Michael doesn’t know about release plans for the movie he filmed in Tasmania, Arctic Blast. After filming it and seeing some of it during looping, he hopes it doesn’t get released at all. (!) He was clearly disappointed in the filming experience versus what was in the script he signed on for. His exact quote was “Not quite Megasnake, but…”

He doesn’t know of an announced release date for Faces in the Crowd. He hasn’t yet done all of the necessary voice-over work for it, and he’ll have a better idea on release date after that. He said it is “sort of” an independent film. Asked if he enjoyed working with the lovely Milla Jovovich, he related that from the set one day, he texted a friend, “I just spent the morning in bed with Milla Jovovich. How was your day?” The same text to his wife, Lexa, didn’t go so well.

There you have the bulk of the news to come out of the con. Don’t forget to check out the gallery, in which a big zoom lens was used, perhaps in ways never intended by man. If you like super close-ups, have a look. 🙂

Last week, David Hewlett thought that maybe his first of three appearances in The CW’s new show Hellcats was going to be aired, but it turned out not to be the case. He tweeted, “Next week I guess!” We’ve checked with TV Guide for the next two episodes, and Hewlett’s name doesn’t appear attached to them, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s not in them. If he isn’t able to direct his fans via Twitter when his episodes will air, we’ll just have to keep our eyes open for him at 9 PM ET on Wednesday nights on The CW. If we do happen to miss his appearance, The CW posts full episodes online for later viewing.

Michael Shanks in "Tower Prep" Tonight? (Updated)

UPDATE: – MSOL has gotten confirmation from the Turner Network that Shanks’ episode is the 6th, titled “Book Report”, and will be aired on November 16.

TOWER PREP LogoAs we said in our Stargate Planner for this day (Tuesday, November 2), we think that it is possible that Michael Shanks will be in tonight’s episode of Cartoon Network’s Tower Prep as Professor Literature.

The reason for the uncertainty is that we were under the impression that Stargate alum Peter DeLuise was the director of Shanks’ episode, but the IMDb record for tonight’s episode (which lists Shanks as a guest star) has a different director. There is an episode coming up next week that IMDb lists as having been directed by DeLuise, however.

We posed our question to MSOL, Shanks’ official website, and they responded at the website, “We’re waiting for confirmation from the Turner network – hope to have information in the next 24 hours – but just in case, tune in or set your DVRs for tomorrow night!”

That sounds like good advice and so we’re passing it on. Tower Prep airs on the Cartoon Network at 8 PM ET/PT and then the episodes are placed online for later viewing.

From the show’s official website: “What is Tower Prep? It’s an exclusive school for students with special abilities, but where it is or how they got there is still unexplained. And who knows what other mysteries will be explored?”

We’re in the process of trying to verify with MSOL whether or not tonight’s episode of the Cartoon Network’s Tower Prep is the one in which Michael Shanks has the role as Professor Literature. We were under the impression that the episode he appeared in was directed by Stargate alum Peter DeLuise, but the information in the IMDb record for tonight’s episode says differently. If you miss watching at 8 PM ET/PT, the show’s official website posts the episodes for later viewing online. [NOTE: MSOL has since confirmed that Michael’s episode is going to air on November 16.]

Shanks Hopes for One More Chapter for SG-1

Daniel Jackson in SUBVERSION (MGM)
The last time we saw Daniel Jackson, he was in SGU's Season One episode SUBVERSION (MGM)

“There still is the desire and belief that if we’re really gonna stop doing this, we do want to have one last chapter,” Michael Shanks told Renegade House during his recent visits to Australia and New Zealand for Armageddon Expo. “So, I do think there’s at least one more in the tank. I think there’s one more DVD movie or one more chapter of the show to be seen by the audience before we’re fully done. So I would expect that to happen.”

This “one last chapter” could be considered to be the third Stargate SG-1 movie, Stargate: Revolution, which was given the go to get written almost immediately after the first two direct-to-video movies did well back in 2008. Brad Wright and Carl Binder finished the script, which features Jack O’Neill, in 2009. Then, the movie was put on indefinite hold.

“The only thing that is blocking the SG-1 movie or the Atlantis movie, the only thing, is the fact that the direct-to-DVD market has gone away,” Wright told TV Deathray. “We were very fortunate with Ark of Truth and Continuum to be among the last very successful direct-to-DVD releases before it all stopped happening. The market has changed, and it’s still changing, and it’s not what it was. And, of course, there have been very big changes at MGM that kind of added to that.

“But we had the intentions to make them. We were ready to go, and it was ‘Wait a while’ and ‘We should wait a little longer,’ and the climate never got better. We held on to a lot of stuff and were ready to go for a very long time, but that doesn’t mean it’s not gonna happen. We have a plan B, and I’ve been talking with MGM about it, and hopefully we’ll still get our chance.”

While awaiting the movie’s green light or whatever “Plan B” promises, Shanks has had the opportunity to reprise his iconic role of Dr. Daniel Jackson in both Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, although he won’t be making an appearance in the latter’s current season (Season Two). Still, even if another chapter is not written for the character, Shanks concluded the interview with some assurance for his devoted fans, “I don’t think the character will ever go away, in my mind, to some degree, and hopefully, not in the audience’s mind either.”

Make sure to visit Renegade House for the complete interview in which Shanks talks about James Spader, Thor, Bulgaria, a more action-oriented Daniel Jackson, and more.
